Do You Take Off Your Shoes When You're Inside Your House?

My mother insisted we always wear shoes in the house, she considered it uncouth to go shoeless and an insult to any guests who might come. In her mind, removing your shoes was equivalent to walking around with any other important article of clothing missing. It would have embarrassed Mom as much to ask you to remove your shoes at the door as it would have embarrassed her to ask you to remove your pants at the door. Having your shoes on showed you were civilized and well enough off to actually own shoes. Only those dirty hippies went barefoot. Keeping your shoes on also avoided any potential odors or embarrassment due to toenail fungus or toe jam.

It wasn't until I went away to college that I met people who insisted on removing shoes when you entered their home. Most of those who insisted were Canadians. This is apparently the custom because they all carried slippers with them in their purses when they went visiting. Apparently this is to keep mud, snow and ice from being tracked into the home during the winter and muddy seasons.

Personally, I don't ask guests to remove their shoes. I don't care if they wear them or remove them. I leave it up to the guest. I can vacuum after they leave if necessary. I usually take my shoes off as soon as I'm home because I'm more comfortable barefoot or in slippers.

I take them off when I go to lie in bed, so there always off.... I basically just take them off when I get in.

Even though I don't have to anymore since I have wood floors, I still do out of habit.

Of course. I don't like wearing shoes when I'm indoor. I put on slippers when I'm in my house.

Yes. I don't want germs from outside, especially public restroom, in my house, where I sleep.

No, not always, I'll admit I have my shoes on most of the time at home. Only take them off if I don't plan on going anywhere for some time or shortly before going to bed. I know it's a bit of a dirty habit, but I'm a pretty busy person so I need to be ready to go at a moment's notice. Removing my shoes every time I step into my home would be a chore, maybe I should consider getting some loafers.

Yes, it keeps the house (and more specifically the carpet) clean. I was taught to take my shoes off at the entry way when I was little, so much so that I would crawl to get things i forgot before I would walk in the house with my shoes on. I honestly thought everyone did that when I was little, why would you not?

always... do people really not remove their shoes? seems weird. I guess half the year here you're wearing boots that are too warm to wear comfortably inside, so guess we just get in the habit of it and do so year round? or its just easier to take off your shoes then vacuum all the time. or both?
