For every tacticool item there's a regular model there's a does the same job.
So if it's not the features then what is it?

Its about the function of the feature rather than the feature itself.

If the only function is to look cool, then you have a tacticool accessory.

A tactical weapon is one that is black with visual features that may/may not add any functionality and reminds people of weapons they see Hollywood actors using to portray military weapons.

Typically the tactical aspect is merely visual and adds no function besides a cool factor but makes liberals wet themselves.

Something is "tactical" when its features are characteristics aid or support certain alternative utilities, or "tactics".

For example, a regular 30 round magazine is just a magazine, it's not special. A waffle-mag could be considered "tactical", because it allows for quicker reloads, and lets the operator reload more easily in a cold or slippery environment. This additional feature (the waffle pattern) allows for added utility in some situations, allowing for tactics.

Another example is a "tactical flashlight", which is to say, a flashlight. It's tactical when mounted on a weapon, because it allows the user to clear rooms even when it's dark, and could even blind enemies at very close quarters. This additional utility makes it "tactical".

A Tactical Remington 870 Shotgun is a specifically home defense shotgun with its shorter barrel. Unfortunately this means you cannot change out the barrels like one could with a regular 870 to go hunting or target shooting with.

Apparently adding MOLLE loops to anything makes it "tactical" For instance these Christmas Stockings: http://www.lapolicegear.com/molle-deluxe-christmas-stocking.html or this "tactical" quiver for your arrows: http://www.itstactical.com/centcom/humor/zulu-nylon-gear-introduces-the-molle-quiver/ this "tactical" BBQ apron http://www.gadgetreview.com/tactical-bbq-apron or this laser-guided tactical necktie http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/1917/

Tacticool is for operations requiring certain outfitting. Say you need to breach a house. Take in close range weapons, like shotguns, pistols and SMG's. Equip them with flashlights, lasers, reflex sights, etc. Or put a reflex sight on top of a sniper rifle's scope in case you need it for a close range shot.

It's all about the situation and what it calls for. Special weapons for special operations.
