What exactly is gamergate?

Depends entirely on those you ask.

One group will say it's a misogynistic movement out to drive women out of gaming and harass anyone they don't like.
Someone else might say they are fighting against social justice warriors.
Another would say they are worse than ISIS.
While yet another might say they are about ethics in game journalism.
Or someone might suggest they are a consumer movement.

If you use wikipedia, it will be all the negative things I said.
If you try different sources, you might get mixed results.

I would remain sceptical of what most people claim it is - yes that includes me.
Be wary of those that will easily label others as something terrible. Especially the so popular misogyny label, because whenever someone labels GamerGate with that, I think of all the women who support GamerGate and are supported back. Which is odd, if they are so misogynistic.

Personally speaking, I'd say GamerGate is a banner of sorts that many people have united under. Originally to expose unethical behaviour and make game journalism get its act together. Nowadays? It's more of a hybrid between clashing with people who disagree with it, trying to make things better (with sometimes bad and good results) and the constant reminder that there are people earning money from being "victims" of GamerGate.

Thank you. I am now slightly less confused than I was before reading that.

You're welcome.
I'd also recommend just straying away from it, partially because there's so much stupid drama, but also because those that don't like GamerGate very often get really mad at those that do support it. It's kind of like a bee-hive.

Maybe I should incite some trolls on twitter and have a jilted lover so I can be harassed. It seem to be very profitable.

Could not have worded it better myself. Also because of GamerGate, it can basically be used as a boogyman for any "feminist" or skeleton that either has something happen to them or gets called out upon. I remember CSI (or Law and Order) did an episode about a bunch of guys harassing a girl gamer that was in favor of the anti-gamergate group, and they still got pissed off and offended by it because "Not all woman are helpless" and other nitpicky shit. You can give both groups everything they demand and they will still find a way to nitpick and complain about something. In short, the only winning move is to not play.

What would the movie be about? A bunch of people typing on keyboards and posting stuff online?

Exactly. How would this be a good movie about a bunch of neckboards writing nasty things to some girl?

No no, don't discount all of the feelings and drama! That's the whole point, it's about how they feel about it, not whether or not it's impactful in society!*

*Sarcasm

Seriously though, they'll try to spin it off as some kind of super important battle to change society for the better, rather than reflect what is most likely just a couple of groups getting their feelings hurt and pretending that everyone cares.

I've been completely avoiding the whole gamergate thing so count me out of this one as well.

Based on what little I know about this whole "Gamer Gate" fiasco, it's pretty much a "he said, she said, they said, they said" type of thing. Personally, I think the whole thing is stupid. A movie based off of this will probably flop.

She clearly knew who to sleep around with to make this happen...

No but on a serious note, whatever hollywood studio is doing the movie is only doing it 'cause they know it's controversial. Therefore the controversy will sell the movie. It's the same thing with the Hatred game where some overreacted to the trailer and the game developers only used that as an opportunity to make more money and get their name out there since it was their first game. The game is shit but still sold a fortune due to it's controversial trailer and the fact that controversy sold the game.

This is a similar situation since the movie studio knows it's controversial and thinks it will sell for that reason, so their only doing it to make money
