Post Reply What's your stance on characters dying and coming back?

I'm fine with it as long as there is a good reason for it.

As a longtime comic book reader, I love it. Not because I don't want the characters to die (I voted other) but because it can add dramatic tension and improve a story. While characters do often come back, sometimes they do die. For a bit at least. But a good writer can also undo a death in a creative and story driven way often with entire plots and stories revolving around a character coming back to life.

It's stupid when that happens, but at the same time I'm really glad to see them come back.

I think it's a really cheap plot device that shouldn't be used unless it's part of the story in a way that makes sense. However, I probably would have cried myself to sleep if...

Once you die, just stay dead

It all really depends on the story and the character, really. The reason why and how also play a big part in it too. Like if they're just gonna come back to life because one of the tears from a character fell on them, then i'd rather them just stay dead. If your gonna bring someone back, at least be a little creative about it. I'd just prefer the character stay dead if they die though tbh.

Dying is bad coming back worse. Who'd waste a perfectly good death.

It can be ok, but it's often over done. Like in Arrow, EVERYONE is either resurrected or never actually dead. Soooo lame.

It depends on how they come back. If there was a reasonable way to explain them coming back then I would be fine. But normally they come back and I'm just left thinking "how?! that is completely impossible!"

This.

Also, it can depend on the story itself. For example, I enjoyed Persona 3 a lot, but I'm at odds with a lot of the fanbase who insist on bringing a specific person (who I won't name due to spoilers) back to life. One of the main themes of the game is accepting death for what it is and moving on from loss. To just throw that out the window for some sort of fantastical, happy-ending insults and spits upon the game.

Persona 3 is a wonderful example of how games can be an excellent medium for storytelling and art. It shouldn't be dumbed down just to pander to some fanfiction writers.

EDIT: And on an unrelated note, crying people back to life is cliche. Be more creative with it if you're going to resurrect characters.

If you're talking about the Seal then I mean, ehhhhh it's possible that E can do it since you know the whole spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler.

E is seeking to do it with the power of the Wild Card (as hinted at during Arena), but I haven't seen anything to really suggest that it'd work. And if it did, what would be keeping SPOILER from waking up SPOILER and, as a result, thereby bringing about The SPOILER?

It'd be more fitting (in regard to the game's themes) for it to be a fruitless endeavor, especially considering what SPOILER is meant to be symbolic of.

I don't mind fake deaths. Just don't overuse it. One Piece has over used it recently with the whole
thing.

Fair enough, fair enough, I always thought about what would happen if E succeeded, I also thought the SPOILER would wake up, but considering how P4A series is turning out and while most likely continue due to P4AU ending, I feel like they might actually bring SPOILER back. I wouldn't mind that if he was like a dlc character that has nothing to do with the story and maybe just a fanservice type thing, but I really don't want him back in the story too much, except mayber for meeting Yu.

If Atlus ever does another Persona fighting game, I'd be up for having him as a DLC character. Maybe they could have the version of him introduced in P3P as an alternate skin or as a separate character with a relatively similar moveset (sort of like the Shadow fighters that Ultimax introduced).

They could have the Answer version too, either way, I'd love him as a DLC
