Didn't realize how philosophical this conversation would get. I agree that Light Yagami was the protagonist of Death Note but the fact that he desires the final say in who deserves to live and who deserves to die puts him firmly in the villain column for me. But don't get me wrong, he is one of my favorite characters in all anime and I was pulling for him throughout the series.

P.S. Keep this convo going... it's getting interesting.

I think it's fine to consider Light the villain. He was a pretty malicious guy. He used everyone and killed without a second thought if he thought you would be more useful to him dead.

I'd say he's a Type III anti-villain.

Thanks for the link! Didn't know that there's also this thing called anti-villians. :D

Anyway, I found this interesting character analysis of Light:

Man, this just made me want to watch Death Note again. It's been six years since I last saw it.

He had a God complex, and got consumed by his desire to change the world so.... that's pretty scary.

Light's a villain who happens to be the protagonist. The two aren't mutually exclusive. A lot of the appeal of Death Note is watching him spiral downwards into his villainous role. It really gets the point across that most villains aren't villainous "for the evil". It's a long, drawn-out process that usually starts with a sympathetic goal.

My vote goes to Caster of Fate/Zero, precisely because his villainy is "for the evil". Caster realizes what an irredeemable monster he is, and he owns it, entirely for its own sake. He unabashedly likes being a villain, and goes about it with the kind of shortsighted, hedonistic glee that I enjoy most in villains. I feel mostly indignation toward schemers, and annoyance at brutal villains who tout the "might makes right" ideology, because to me, evil makes the most sense removed from intellect. Caster embodies the sort of mindless, pointless evil that I can appreciate. A thinking villain is just a human. Caster is something else.

Itachi was not villainous at all, btw.

So ja, as above I think Dio Brando is an awesome villain. Also keep your eyes peeled for the villain in the forthcoming JoJo part IV because he is legendary.

And the oft-mentioned Hisoka is also highly entertaining. I'd add Meruem except that he became substantially less villainous over time.

Kumagawa

Scary, powerful, intelligent, unpredictable, deceitful, sympathetic, and funny as hell. One of the most entertaining villains I've ever seen.

Also, I really don't consider Hisoka a villain. I think the most villainous thing he ever did was kill Gotoh and that wasn't even really horrible. I don't know how to classify Hisoka but I definitely wouldn't call him a villain.

He was an acting villain for quite a while, even though at the core he was one of Konoha's greatest heroes.

He proves though, that the only good Uchiha is a dead Uchiha :P.
