My son lives in Japan. He's been there for 8 years. Climb Mt Fuji, they have a walking stick you can buy, or, if you prefer, they have a small stick you can get instead. They have checkpoints at certain intervals on your way up the mountain. At each checkpoint they put a stamp, or will burn a stamp on your walking stick. If you make it all the way to the top, you get a special stamp on your stick to show you made it to the top! Also, I think there is a token or something you can buy only at the top of the mountain that you can't get anywhere else in Japan.

Also, in Japan there are things you can only get in certain places. For example....Kit Kat bars. In one airport they sell green tea flavored Kit Kat bars, and that is the only place you can get them, but in another airport they will have a different flavor, and again, it's the only place you can get that flavor.

The cherry blossom festival is really big there, so if you can you might want to plan your trip so you can be there at that time, if not see what other festivals they have when you are going. They like festivals.

By the way. Interesting fact. The Japanese peel all of their fruit. They don't eat the skins. That includes grapes! Yes, they even peel their grapes.

Not sure where you'll be, but I've spent a lot of time in Tokyo. Yoyogi Park is basically Tokyo's equivalent of Central Park, it's pretty amazing. If you'd like to see a more traditional side of Tokyo, head to Asakusa and see the Buddhist temple, Sensō-ji. If you like anime, check out Akihabara. If clubbing is your thing, Roppongi is your place (if you're not in Roppongi Hills/the nice part, get ready to be mad hustled by Nigerians haha). Odaiba has gorgeous views of the Rainbow Bridge and one of the biggest ferris wheels in the world (I went with a girl to Odaiba, it was one of the most beautiful dates of my life).

I also highly recommend Kyoto. It's very different from Tokyo, but absolutely amazing. Have fun, and best of luck.

My son lives in Japan, and my other son has visited Japan. Here are a few things they told me

1) Do not tip in restaurants. They consider it extremely rude. They feel that if you tip them you are telling them their food is so bad that you must give them "charity" to keep their doors open.

2) When you eat noodles, slurp! Look around and you will see others slurping their noodles, if you don't slurp, it is considered rude.

3) Do NOT point out that their English on their signs are wrong. They have a lot of misspelled English words, or the words are backwards, yes, to us it is funny, but if you point it out and try to correct their error, again, that is rude

4)They peel all of their fruit, even the grapes. They feel the peels on the fruit is unsanitary

5) They have things you can only buy or get in certain places. For example, if you climb Mt Fuji you can buy a walking stick and on the way up you will get a mark stamped or burned onto your stick. If you make it to the top of Mt Fuji you can get a mark on your stick saying you climbed to the top! You can't get that anyplace else. Also certain foods are only sold in certain places. For example, they have unusual flavored Kit Kat candy. One flavor is only sold in one airport and you can't get it anywhere else, and in the other airport it is another flavor, which you can't get anywhere else.

6)They don't talk to random strangers, or even to each other on public transportation. Also they cram themselves in like sardines in a can, it is very packed on the trains.

7)Have fun!!!
