Alright, I know this is a long shot...but to express sarcasm.

A dog can feel love and express it. A squid can feel pain. Elephants can die from stress.

But what creature can express sarcasm? None except the Homo sapiens, baby!

*slow clap...*

Humanity is a species with a nature that mirrors the world's nature -- conflict. We're essentially living representations of chaos and, thereby, are the perfect examples of its beauty, as well as its flaws. We create magnificent structures, ideas, technologies, and systems yet simultaneously we destroy not only the beauties of this world, but those that we create as well.

To be human is to thrive and suffer in our own magnificent imperfection. We oppose ourselves not just as a species, but as individuals, and in doing so we're able to achieve a greater understanding of the world as well as ourselves. Opposing perspectives have allowed us to doubt and doubt has allowed us to question. Our civilizations are so advanced because of this very reason; our chaotic nature compelling us to form more advanced societies -- either due to necessity or the desire for more efficiency. Thus, we've created a perfect example of the pros and cons of controlled chaos.

A member of the genus Homo. Including Homo sapiens or the modern day human of which we are all included.

While a lot of people would say that only humans have the capacity for love and other emotions, the others in this thread have already disproved that. However, there is a certain emotion that is very uniquely human.

Hatred.

No where else in nature will you find another species that is so good at hurting each other in so many different ways, often with no reason at all, other than pure, unabashed, hatred. At one point or another, everyone has been on the receiving end of this destructive feeling, yet even after all these centuries, we still continue to hurt each other and ourselves, almost like we don't even remember how it feels.
In the immortal words of the 12th doctor:
"Forgetting is the human race's superpower. If you remembered how everything felt, you would stop having wars...and stop having kids."
We are so very good at forgetting that we are able to hurt each other over and over, wage hundred year wars, reduce entire cities to molten slag, and for what? your guess is as good as mine, after all, I'm only human.

Just wanted to say that this --^ is fantastic.

If you're asking what something 'means', you're going to get a different answer from everybody.
Philosophers have argued and conversed about this for centuries.

Being humans means a lot, if you wanted to categorize and distinguish us from other life forms, that'd be pretty much it,
Humans do things that other living things do, and it's only the unique things that we accomplish that defines us as species.

Struggle for nothing on a little planet that is at war. Have people following ridiculous codes of honor and killing each other for what terrible morals they believe in. Oppression and depression with a side of hope controlled by the higher ups. Backwards ideals and double standards. To be a pretty broken species. Broken by each and our advanced minds. At least in this era, who knows if we change for the better in 100+ years.

I feel like this is one of those questions everyone has an answer that they feel is not wrong. Um, i'm sure there are scientific answers that make logical sense, but could be disproved by another logical explanation. In the end, people will determine what it means to be human since there is not wrong or right answer, which is fine.
