Article from Siliconera.com

"Clannad, a visual novel originally released by Key for PCs in 2004, made its English debut thanks to Sekai Project today. In doing so, it ended up accomplishing something rather momentous. Not only did the $49.99 game end up in the top 10 sellers on Steam at launch, but it briefly held the number three slot. This meant it was beating out games like Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Grand Theft Auto V, and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate.

In the hours since its launch, Clannad has since slipped down one spot in Steam’s top sellers list. However, it still remains in the top five games available on the digital distributor, ahead of Grand Theft Auto V and Undertale.

Clannad’s English release is the result of a successful 2014 Kickstarter campaign, during which 5,819 people raised $541,161. It is immediately available on Steam for Windows PCs. It’s normal price is $49.99, but it is temporarily $42.49 until November 30."

I just bought the game myself to replay it!

ehhh I really REALLY want to get it but the problem is that steep price!

I can understand that they want to get their money's worth from the game, but charging $49.99 for a visual novel seems kind of ridiculous to me. I'll still get it at some point don't get me wrong (the current offer of 15% off is only $42.49, still not worth it imo) but right now its not looking so appealing

Here's hoping it goes on sale for Valentine's Day and then I can cry my eyes out and not just my wallet

I am definitely going to buy it this year. Probably on Friday xD
It's going to be a dark day for my wallet.

Holy shit! What the hell's up with that price? Who would pay $50 for a visual novel from 2004? I get that it's Clannad, but that doesn't make it any less outrageous.

Maybe if they released it in segments and chapters like Higurashi and added in additional content (such as new art for the characters), I'd feel more comfortable purchasing it. I don't know. What I do know is that's incredibly offputting. It's ten dollars short of a major new AAA release, for God's sake. Who charges that much for what is essentially a digital choose-your-adventure book?

they sell these games for ~$60 or so in Japan :p (more or less depending on the edition, whether it's a short sequel, etc)

Yeah, but Japan is crazy. That $60 dollars can also be used to purchase an hour of cuddling with a random stranger.

A legitimate copy of FSN physical costs about 70 on Amazon.

Since Kid went out of business, Ever17 been around $200 cause everyone pirates it.

School Days sells for about $40, and that probably had extremely high costs due to being entirely animated.

Albeit, let's be fair, Clannad is all ages, thus nothing was there to censored to my knowledge.

The games take about 30-50 hours to finish according to VNDB, whilst you could play Fallout 3 for hundreds.

Yeah 50 dollars for the re-release of an 11 year old game isn't something I'm interested in. I'd need at least a 75% sale to take that plunge.

I immediatly bought it the second it came out on Steam, literally and maaan... these OST's get me everytime.
Personally think it's definitely worth the price. But then again I payed 40 instead of 50.

Lol I'd buy FSN in a heartbeat if they'd put it for sale there.
I've heard that a Little Busters VN is also on it's way, hopefully that's true.

Are you talking about the original FSN or the new PS Vita one? If the original, I can understand that for the same reason that Ever17 is priced so high. Isn't it difficult to find an original copy of FSN in circulation nowadays? And if the latter, that has to be imported from Japan and thereby would experience a natural increase in price.

I'm surprised School Days prices that much due to being almost universally hated. Was it just the anime adaptation that people despised?

Regardless, I don't know who would pay that much for a VN. If I wanted to, I could pick up a set of all five Game of Thrones books for around thirty dollars or so -- a series currently spanning 4,273 pages according to Wikipedia.

Yes, the anime adaptation is quite hated but didn't quite translated to the VN. One of the reasons why VN is that high is because IT IS ENTIRELY ANIMATED. It is basically an interactive anime....with full on uncensored sex scenes. UNCENSORED.

I was talking about the PC version, because that's what it was made for originally, I see now it is $40ish dollars for the PS Vita, whatever that is.

It's also a mediocre tale of heartbreak and sadness and love triangles and all that, but we all know the real reason.
