Do you think that we are turning into a society that goes with the idea of guilty until proven innocent?

I'm more referring to how the internet allows for misinformation to spread along with rumors. I feel that unlike rumors in real life, these rumors can hurt someone's reputation a lot easier and a lot more as the internet can allow for this spread of misinformation to occur.

For example, accusing someone of rape when they did no such thing. In real life, this would probably be taken to court and would be fairly decided. Online though, people would more likely go on a witch hunt to make sure that more happens to the person accused than necessary.

Another example would be that guy who killed that lion a few months back. Right when word got out, people got his information and released it. He had to close down his dentistry and more. If this news wasn't on the internet this probably wouldn't happen. Before it was decided whether or not he would go to court, people were already "placing charges" (by that I mean they wanted him dead or other punishments) on him.

Either way, those are my thoughts and I would like to hear what everyone else thinks. Do you think that the rise of the internet is slowly causing society to turn to a "guilty until proven innocent" instead of the already in place "innocent until proven guilty"? If not, why?

I love the internet, but it causes some messed up things.

Yeah just look at the Bill Cosby case how he was considered a rapist before he even went to court.
Or the Mike Brown Darren Wilson case when everybody was rioting and it turned out the evidence showed that Mike Brown robbed a convience store before hand and charged the cop.

I think it's always been: on paper, innocent till proven guilty. But like in actuality, it's guilty until proven innocent.

I mean when u see someone getting arrested, u automatically assume they're guilty if ur a bystander so... yeah.

Blame it on the SJWs trickling down tumblr demanding outrage over the slightest perception someone's rights were violated. Then there are the Bill Cosby's and Jared Fogles, people clearly guilty confessing all their demons that further damage perceptions that criminals are all around.

I'm not a lawyer so I'll "wing it" until one comes along with my two cents. Anyhow as you know, the phrase, "Guilty until proven innocent" , at first glance, looks easier to digest, that until you are proven beyond a shadow of a doubt you aren't innocent" versus the politically correct term "innocent until proven guilty",

...that you are genuinely presumed innocent up until your conviction. A system of law, checks and balances, to ensure the innocent are not prosecuted while the guilty don't get out..The idea is that its better to presume someone is not guilty until you are sure that they are, is almost the same thing taken from a different view, but "innocent until proven guilty" is supposed to be correct when the system works. If your question is "does it work" or "how often" , I'd have to look into it more than I have time atm, so really I can't say.

The internet has indeed made it insanely easy to spread misinformation.

A persons reputation can be destroyed, and in many cases their life ruined,
just because enough people on the internet decide it's what's right.
By the time the truth has been revealed, the majority have already seen
the initial opinion, decided it was the truth, raged about it, caused what damage
there was to cause, and finally forget about it before the truth is quietly reveled in
a side article on some news website.

I find this very difficult to discuss with people, as when I try to discuss it with those
who support internet vigilantism, they accuse me of being a supporter of many of the
flamebait crime suspects. When I discuss it with someone who is anti internet vigilante,
they try to pull me into supporting those same people... when their not just griping about
gullible tumblrites.

I find this frustrating as it serves to validate a political belief rather than discuss the actual
problem, which is important and highly pervasive.

Damn!

Anyway, it has always been guilty until proven innocent. That's what Social Justice achieved numerous times.

Witch Trials are better for the people running the show.

No doubt, and really whether innocent comes before guilty or after is arguably the same once you consider in adversarial legal systems how investigating and often detaining in due process is supposed to rule out someone's culpability to ensure they get the right guy or haven't make an error(s) that would mitigate the prosecution of defendants accused of offenses, but for the poor , disabled, and sometimes minorities it appears stacked against them, and you're right when you say tumblrites and other sjws hypersensitize the public through the media. When I hear of my parents talk of how simpler things were back whenever I can understand because there wasn't the technology and widespread accessibility of media today, despite the conveniences and better health care of modern times . Its meant to be set up to rule out in a systematized and scientific manner tho.
