These are very good points and I highly agree with them but take a look at the vast majority of what civilians are doing these days. They flip burgers, sell cars, work other retail jobs, and other numerous jobs that are in the end useless once the lights go out so to speak. I mean these jobs have skill sets that serve no practical use in let's be fair in a time that will be a dog eat dog period. Yeah eventually some semblance of order is going to be established, the sort of chain of command soldiers are use to if nothing else. But till then only the useful skills civilians have mastered will matter. Engineers, Architects,Mechanics, and Machinists in particular will likely be highly prized in the rebuilding process, then farmers for obvious reasons and Doctors as well. Soldiers do receive high level medical training, but most of it is trauma care and not the specialized fields of medicine like surgery and disease treatment.

And well I am not about to discount the value of religion in keeping up moral I doubt the matters of philosophy will matter much for a very long time. Worrying about the whys, hows, and whats of society at large will be in my mind a waste of time in a period where your next meal will come from is more important . As for currency, I doubt it will be anything more complicated then a bartering and trade system. Currency only works in a modern society such as ours, so bankers and investment skills sets will be worse then useless. Ditto for history, I am a fan of history. But even though I consider it a duty to learn it I still think the here and now in such a situation would be more important then anything else history would have to teach. At least until society is truly rebuilt.

Given all that I still believe a rather large chunk of the civilian population wouldn't survive an apocalypse

All fair points. I concede -- I'd most likely die.

ranwolfs right soldiers and people with offense and defense skills would be at a stark advantage during the post apocalyptic era. If all the knowledge was taken away during the post apocalyptic era wed all go back to swords man ship . i kinda hope that happens iam a swordsman myself as well and would like to see swordplay come back in our era. Guns are good but swordsmanship is a forgotten skill set that can come back in the post apocalyptic era. Some commentators believe that after world war 3 which will probably end in nukes swordsman ship will come back . Every one will go back to the old way no internet no anime just clans battling it out for control till the strongest clan rises .

The question is, would you want to survive?

I mean no internet, no electricity, no gas, no supermarket, no more Tales games. I mean why would you wanna go on?

You could charge up your portable consoles before death and ruin come to end civilization as we know it. And some older portables, such as the Gameboy, rely off of batteries.

Still doesn't solve the 'no more Tales games' problem. May as well just go in the first wave when faced with that prospect.

Edit that. Second wave. I wanna watch Trump be put up against the proverbial wall.

1)
Don't be too chicken to dig up insects and arachnids to eat.

2)
The best way to avoid parasites in crickets and grasshoppers is to twist and pull their heads off. If done right, the internal organs will be attached to the heads and simply slip out. Then, the bugs are ready to cook/eat raw.

3)
Try and research native plants, fungi, and animals. If that means pillaging libraries; so be it.

4)
Don't be too chicken to bite the living hell out of opponents/food. We have one of the most infectious bites on the planet. Use it.

5)
Remain aware that, if all else fails, impaling via eye socket and mouth is a lethal/crippling option.

6)
Don't snub natural remedies too much. You'll may have no other option but to go holistic and shit. May not be perfect, but you won't always be able to rely on modern medicine. Don't be the dumb ass unwilling to rub salt in an infected wound. Just remember that plenty of modern medicine originate from natural sources.

7)
If you hunt an animal, gut them ASAP, or the organs will ruin the meat.

Come on it's not like the entirety of modern society would collapse. There are ways of generating electricity that don't rely on your local power company. Simple windmills and hydroelectric dams are more then capable of being built by your average Joe off the street. The stuff isn't nuclear physics for crying outloud. As for supermarkets, isn't that what gardens and hunting skills are for. How do you think the food reaches those places, by the blood, sweat, and tears of farmers, hunters, and truck drivers. What's wrong with cutting out the middle man?

the governace in the the post apocalyptic era will probably be a clan or tribal dictatorship scatered through various regions . They will porbably tax the people under their shelter for the protection that they provide and as a means of controlling them.

I wonder what sword i would go for if i could choose any probably a berserk style sword more then my katana but no one really makes swords like that any more . sword making is also a good skill set the best armies had the best swords. ARchery would also be important a good archer could make a lot of difference in the clan . It would come down to who has the best fighters if it went to just a clan war.

Swords, bows.. Mate your average military base is sitting on literally trillions of rounds of ammunition. Combine that with all the gun shops out, and those with the skill sets necessary to reload and manufacture new ammunition and I doubt it'll become the dark ages style of warfare you're thinking of. Not to mention military grade weapons can take a metric ton of abuse and keep on ticking.

depends man if it was a nuclear wipe out then every thing would be destroyed . only the ones who took shelter in fortified underground bunkers would survive thus transporting us back into medivel times. but if it was a semi wipe out where modren equipment would survive then i would use any gun i could get my hands on . m16s for accuracy and aks for durability shot guns with sg or triple cartirdiges could also be used effectively . tactical knives would be imperative like an ontario m9 if i could find one or a buck . or flippers like the benchmade .

Couldn't the bunkers just be loaded with guns? Why would swords be present there, but not guns?
