It's another day, another round of catalog titles coming to Crunchyroll's library! Today, we've got 2 movies in both subbed AND dubbed form coming for Crunchyroll members in the US and Canada: Jin Roh and Fist of the North Star: The Movie, available today at 4pm and 6pm Pacific Time, respectively.

In a very different Tokyo from the one we know today, the totalitarian government rules with an iron fist. But a group called "the Sect" is staging demonstrations and challenging the government's martial law. Constable Fuse of the Capital Police's Special Unit is on a mission to stop a Sect demonstration when he encounters a girl in the sewers under Tokyo. When he fails to shoot as ordered, he is put on trial, questioned, and "re-conditioned" as a soldier. The dead girl haunts him, both in his dreams and in the face of her sister, whom Fuse has befriended. But Fuse has made himself a target for some very powerful men. And as the world comes crashing down around him, Fuse is continually challenged to decide what is real and what is right.

In the near future, Earth has been devastated by a nuclear hell. In these troubled times, kinetic martial arts have replaced weapons of mass destruction, and the legendary Fist of the North Star style may then be the only hope for humanity's survival. Ken, the rightful master of Fist of the North Star, is forced to fight old friends gone mad, wicked new enemies, and even comes face to face with his power hungry elder brothers. All this in the hope that he will someday be reunited with his beloved Julia.

Enjoy~!

Keep in mind that these were sublicensed from Discotek, whom they recently formed a partnership with. As a US-based company, they likely only hold the rights for North America, so it's not that surprising that all these recent Discotek streams have been US & Canada only. They would have to go through completely different channels to gets the rights to stream in other regions, while Discotek, thanks to the partnership, is basically just handing CR their entire back-catalog of NA-rights-only titles.

Jin-Roh is a classic! The art style is something certainly missed today. The music, the atmosphere, the Red Riding hood reference! Check it out!

Do you need to see the FotNS tv anime before you see the movie? I don't have time to watch a long-running eighties anime.

Who it came from is basically irrelevant, although I have heard unconfirmed murmurings that Discotek also holds UK & Ireland rights for some of their titles. There's nothing to stop CR going to whoever holds the rights in other territories and licensing it from them too. When CR gets North America only rights, they have made a conscious decision not to get other territories. I'm sure there are reasons why, like it would be too costly in time and/or money, but it's still a conscious decision on their part not to obtain other territories...

But I think the point for a lot of international posters is that we're obviously getting scraps. Take this past fortnight or so. NA gets 9 or so TV series in full and several movies, some of which are even dubbed, and we here in the UK got a pathetic 2 OVA episodes of Kuroko's Basketball and that's it, and many international customers didn't even get that. When you are charging the same or a similar amount to your international customers (or almost 10% more in the UK), is it fair/appropriate to give them a drastically reduced catalogue and a raft of NA-only announcements? I'm not even sure people would be that bothered about getting different catalogue titles, I think they're mostly upset about the fact they're paying a similar amount and getting basically nothing.

A lot of this is not helped by Crunchyroll deliberately emailing their entire subscriber base with a dedicated email to a title that was excluded from an entire continent, displaying titles not available in your region on the homepage (which would probably constitute false advertising in the UK regardless of any legal disclaimers they use), pushing site wide banners out about titles excluded from an entire continent, using phrases like "we hope you all enjoy it" for NA-only titles, deliberately hiding or playing down region information on forum posts and having a pretentious 'Library Expansion Project' that did not actually expand the library...

Lugiamania, would you please consider adding a notification in the title if the acquired shows are only available in the USA and Canada based on the reactions on this and your previous announcements from several premium members? For instance, just adding something like "(NA)" at the end like MilesExpress999 did recently would be a great improvement to us. It frustrating for the people outside these regions to get their hopes up, just to be disappointed instantly each single time when heavily restricted catalogue shows are announced. I hope you understand our point of view.
