Is it just me, or is the MC just completely unbearable. Does he get any bearable by the end?

I mean what is this sad sack of lard even supposed to be?

I will agree he is a bit unbearable at first, but He is a realistic and very relatetable MC... people rip on him cause he is fat, but he is superior to Kirito in that he is in no way generic. The reasons for him developing his wings and how they have to do with his mental scars was actually a really interesting concept. In fact, the rules and even the incarnate system of Accel World in general are all quite interesting concepts. The same goes for Kawahara's newest light novel series: "The Isolator" the MC, Minoru Utsugi is a testament to Kawahara having learned from his mistakes in SAO. SAO is actually the worst of his works, not to say it isn't good, it is pretty good, but simply put it cannot hold a candle to Accel World or The Isolator. Seeing as how only light novel #1 has come out I at this point cannot say which of these two is better, I'll wait till Isolator gets at least 3 novels. I highly reccomend the isolator, the novel is told in the 3rd person and alternatively follows both the MC and the main villain which was a great way to develop characters

I feel that comparing him to Kirito is unfair, considering how these two shows have a similar concept but are different genres. OP, harem MCs are not supposed to have character development considering that they don't need it and SAO was one example of this. However, while I appreciate that the author attempted to create a relatable MC who grows as a result of his experiences, I feel that he did not do it very well in Accel World. I find that the stories that do attempt this have trouble creating a weak, relatable MC without making him unbearable to watch. Parasyte and Guilty Crown, hell, even Attack on Titan manage to pull this off with varying success. The MCs were both relatable and interesting. The MC in Accel World, however, only manage to make me cringe.

This Isolator novel does sound interesting though, I think I'll check it out.

No doubt Haru is a very realistic and relatalble character, but I think he gets more hate for his character design more than anything. It would've made more sense if he was just slightly shorter than the others but instead he's roughly the same height as Yuniko, Accel World's loli character. Maybe he'll eventually get taller as the series progresses and break away from the defenseless little pig persona and gain further confidence.

I can see him become more like his alternate universe look alike Biscuit from Mobile Suit Gundam: IBO as the time passes on.
