I know their story got picked up by Variety. I hope it doesn't spread any further.

All media are whores for hits and clicks. Dailymail is just a really big whore about it. Racism, sexism, discrimination--that all gets the clicks. It's often a bunch of misconstrued hogwash though.

The problem with that behavior though, is that they increase racial tensions. It's completely counter productive.

I can't believe people are freaking out about them changing the poster. I guess they're against Wookiees too because Chewbacca's missing.

Wookiee-ist!

Fucking morons.

Wow I did not notice that. Thanks for pointing that out

Yep that is right. Whatever topic people are going to talk about, news media will write about it

Yep, np. Media often makes you miss those those sorts of details with their clickbait headlines.

Always have intense scrutiny with these sorts of articles. They'll get yah all the time if you're not careful.

They cannot change the film, but they sure as hell can change the advertising. In Asia, this is incredibly important, as Asia is one of the biggest revenues for Western movies. The whiter the cast, the better the film profits will be even if it isn't a good movie whatsoever. This is one of the reasons why Hollywood casts whites more often and even whitewashes the roles - better reception, better international fare.

The international market must sell, and Asia is a big supplier of the profits.

Now, I know I know - Dailymail? Not the most creditable source by far. However, I 100% back them on this, as I've (time and time again) come across this fact in Asia - when a black character features prominently, or the movie focuses on a blacks mainly (for example, 12 Years a Slave) the most will feature white character predominantly, no matter how insignificant their role is. This was just a more recent article that highlighted the fact.

For example, in 12 Years a Slave, Brad Pitt plays a very small role as a Canadian abolitionist. However, in posters across Asia, he's featured in the prime, over all the (main) black characters. In fact, in some posters, no black characters are featured at all which is incredibly amusing, as the movie is about black-slavery in 1800's pre-Civil war America. And it was made by a black Britisher.

I'm very curious about how Disney upcoming movie, Moana (about a brown Pacific Islander girl) will do globally, and especially with Asia. Especially compared to the Nordic-inspired Frozen which was a massive hit in Asia, especially in places like South Korea and Japan. Those Scanny looks sure helped!

Anyway, like I said - it'll be funny to see how annoyed China (and the other Asian countries) will be when they see how big a role the black man will play in The force Awakens.

The director definitely took a risk (in terms of the international market) of featuring a black man so predominantly...

Yeah that is true. I miss the day when promoting a movie was a good thing. After the second the look. The x-wing pilot is missing in the poster.

Wasn't that 12 years a slave poster thing...in Italy? Not Asia...

I really think you're jumping the gun here.

I almost let them off with it being as it being a completely different poster given the differences and other missing characters, but the fact that someone says it looks like Boyega has been minimised on every Asian poster makes me curious. I'd prefer some visual evidence rather than just the claim of some guy on the internet, but it's definitely fishy if it's true. I don't want to start making accusations, though. I feel these days people are too touchy and quick to see things that aren't there. If people hadn't brought this up in the first place I'd have thought nothing of it.

Personally, I'd delete him from the poster, along with every character besides Han Solo.

Nope this is the only poster in question. So it's not every. Otherwise they'd be taking that shit for a field goal.

Nope, the 12 Years a Slave thing was also in Asia as well (though you're absolutely right on Italy and other countries doing the same thing).

And well...if anyone is jumping the gun, it's you considering you have been quick to point out Chewbacca and a a fighter plane missing in the poster and trying to saying shrinking a black character is the same thing. Like...do you not know of the racial issues and colorism in Asia? Or are you just ignoring and downplaying them? Perhaps you should read up a bit more before posting and trying to act like it isn't what it actually is.

If that is indeed the case then 'hurray'. The internet is being the internet again, once again proving the balance of life goes on.
