Your opinion of the large U.S. military presence in Japan?
Posted 12/6/15
It's inappropriate. See my thread on how the us tries to police the world. In WWII, it was reasonable, but its been decades and since then japan and the us relations have been almost perfect. If they can leave Iraq then they should leave japan to handle its own affairs.

Title says it all... A good 40% of the island of Okinawa is a USMC base, with tons of marine camps in the mainland, naval installations, even army cryptologic linguists get stationed there lol. My step-sister's bf was in the Marines for 4 years, and after his tour in Afghanistan he was stationed at camp Smedley D. Butler on Okinawa, and he said all of the townspeople there really don't like the presence of Americans there... he got kicked out of a club because he was an American. So what do you all think, should we keep a lot of troops there, or start planning for the JSDF to take the reins? I personally can go either way; our bases in Japan are more or less strategic, but I'm not sure the US should be there forever...

I lived there for 10 years and from what I've experienced, they loved us there. You also seem unaware of the relationship between Japan and China.

I am aware that Japan is pretty much the Israel of Asia, they have no friends except for the US and a few other NATO nations, and at least the Japanese people on the main islands like Americans and stuff... maybe it's just Okinawa. idk. XD All of my buddies who are Marines complain about being stationed there too, I think they are just bored, and want to be shooting at stuff, or do Marine stuff lol

We should never have been there invading to start with. It was a vietnam, gonna happen anyway. Its tough how it is there, but thats life. Just inserting us there is putting allied lives in jeopardy. Sad, but true.

From what I can gather, Okinawan's don't like the US presence per say. But greater Japan has a really high (around 90%) favoribility rating for the US military presence. Also, aside from the treaty ending WWII, the US and Japan have made extensions, and reductions to some of the US bases, and it looks like we'll be there indefinitely. As far as some of the other commentary about our Korean bases, South Korea pays the US to maintain troops there, to an extent. As for my own opinion, keep the US presence (Japan and Korea), it is a huge national security asset. Also, with things in Southeast Asia escalating, more serious talk about a second forward deployed carrier is coming up in DoD, according to US mlilitary news tracking sites.

Also, to the OP, a large portion of the northenr part of Okinawa is a USMC training area, but the USMC base facilities are smaller. I believe the USAF base is the largest (non training) military facility on the island.

Why do we even station military bases in foreign countries in the first place? Too lazy to research on my own. Can someone give me a simplified explanation?

Same reason everybody has a base in Djibouti.

Don't want to argue why we invaded Iraq back in 03, but we pulled out before we restabilized that area of the world, Sadam was a bad guy but the Deash are worse.
