I've always had an unusually strong memory, and unfortunately that lets me remember every single detail of the most embarrassing moments in my life. Since I have nothing better to do lately, I often think back on these moments and feel like banging my head against a desk all over again.

For example, while I was in graduate school my mentor wanted me to present my grad research on predicting civil wars using economic indicators to his senior economic research class. Around that same time, I had recently discovered the anime Eden of the East and was really into it. During the class Q&A after my presentation, one of the students asked why I thought of the topic of my research. Instead of answering the truth about how I was looking through the WHO's database and noticed they kept records of civil wars throughout the world for the past forty years, I gave this gem of humiliation:

"Well, I've always had a strong desire to help society. This is best defined by the old term Noblesse Oblige, or the obligations of nobility. I believe that people who are capable of helping others, either through tangible or intangible means, have a responsibility to. So I began this research with the intent that if we're able to improve our ability to predict a conflict, we would then be in a better position to prevent said conflict."

It's like I announced that I'm a nerd and completely full of myself.

Anyone else have a moment where you've said something so idiotic that it haunts you to this day?

yup i would have certainly thought that had i heard someone say something like that

i had a prof who who pick someone at beginning of every class to ask a question that everyone had to answer. one day i was picked, and not even thinking i was like "what's the most vivid dream you've ever had" and like 85% of the class was male and they were all like "nooo man no" and the prof was also like "uh let's have another question"

still embarrassed about it to this day

Heh seems like the answer to that question would be more embarrassing than the question itself.

I remember once in school asking a girl if she "tickled her clit" embarrased the shit out of myself. Felt regret.

Hmm once at a LAN party i was rather drunk and i said something about my sister thinking i was being funny and i still pay for that to this day (it still gets bought up)..

During a lecture, the professor asked a number questions about emissions from from industry (can't remember what the question was exactly). Instead of saying PM10's, I said clearly for everyone to hear PMS. You can look up the definitions
