There is no cut and dry answer here. Some older anime are classics for a reason, yet others are left in the wayside for their own reasons. Some modern anime become instant classics, whereas others simply become a flash in the pan. I adore shoes both from then and now.

I grew up with Naruto, Yugioh and Pokemon. I tend to watch newer anime than older anime since I've seen more newer anime.

Every generation/period has its own gems that make it a great series. Um, I definitely see a lot more moe and common tropes being used more often in this day and age, whether its good or bad. Overall, I think things have improved.

I grew up in the '80s, when anime first started being a thing here in the U.S., and ... there's still nothing quite like shows from that period. You kinda had to be there. Fist of the North Star was only the tip of the iceberg.

But! I still watch plenty of anime now, of course. I really got back into it in the late '90s as a member of the Sailor Moon generation, and then I hit a dry period in the mid-'00s, which I think was just a rough patch in general for the medium, before I came here to Crunchyroll and rediscovered the love.

Well I hope I don't show my age to much lol but I grew up on Robotech my 1st movies (on VHS) I purchased in the mid 90's were Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell. Those movies really gave me an intro into Anime. in he late 90's a local video store would order me Anime VHS tapes with subs. at this time I was just going off the cover pictures and titles of the Anime. This was about 18 years ago lol

I prefer anime now. most people would probably say the anime they grew up with, but nostalgia goggles are all rose colored, and I personally couldn't care less about nostalgia. the characters and stories from then and now are about the same, but the visuals, sound, and other production aspects of the anime now are so much better than the anime from back then that it's no question.

the one thing I DO miss are the length of the series. nowadays, most series are only 12 - 13 episodes long, when they used to be 24 - 26 or longer. I'm not really a fan of long series, but I enjoy it when the series takes it's time to flesh out the characters and the setting over the longer episode count than how nowadays most series feel so rushed.

I think there's a much higher quantity now available here compared to when I grew up so it's much harder to pick out the really good series. There also tends to be more fanservice but a higher level of animation. Ultimately for me though, shows like Rurouni Kenshin (minus season 3 and the reflection movie) hold up and I'll still rewatch them but that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying things like the new season of Haikyu! Really, what's good is good and in 5 years, I won't remember what fanservicey stuff I ended up watching, just what made an impression.
