asharka

It's back to the way the old player worked, complete with the little pictures.

Yeeeeeeees~ This makes me happy beyond words.

I should have a pleasant surprise waiting for me when I watch anime on the living room.

Fond of the ability to browse by genre, that there's fewer and shorter loading periods after the app initially loads and of bringing my queue and the rest of the anime library all on the same page. Also fond of upcoming episodes in the queue which have blank thumbnails not causing scrolling to be laggy anymore and it being simpler from a UI standpoint to browse through seasons of a show.

Not quite so fond of no longer being able to see what time I'm at in the video without pausing or being able to get a more exact timestamp, of not being able to scroll through the alphabetical anime listing by letter, of episode synopses still being unreadable past a certain length (although that does appear to have at least been addressed for series synopses) or of the issue with certain titles missing their first 6-10 seconds on the Roku still being a thing.

Especially since you cannot scroll through the alphabetical listing by letter, not being able to scroll left from the beginning to get to the end is a real pain. If you want to browse titles that start with Z you can either press the button to move five to the right a bunch (since you can't just hold that down, of course) or hold down the arrow key to scroll through them one at a time through over 500 other titles. If you could just scroll left from # to Z or scroll through by letter this would be much simpler, but the current method makes the alphabetical section increasingly useless and frustrating the further in the alphabet you want to check.

I hope maybe this version is also a bit more stable and will result in fewer freezes, error messages and other general technical hitches than was observed in the previous version, but I won't know for sure about that one way or the other until I've been able to spend more time with this new version.

The fact that it fixes the crashing problem I've been having for a few days on my Roku 2 means it's 1000x better than the previous version...

Yes! scroller works!!! I'm no longer going to war against the Crunchyroll scroller of death!!!
Ahh I missed this so much.

Design looks nice.
Like the others - very happy we have shows ordered by genre too

Still hoping for series ratings (stars) to be added

Thanks for the improvements!

It looks like netflix now. Imho it's a step back. IE: [Visual overload] Imo it's not necessary to see several different categories when they're categorized as things such as (Popular, Simulacast, Updated, etc). It was fine having one list to scroll through, easier to keep concentration where its intended. The old version had a visual indicator for the other lists where a subtle yet noticeable Text at the side of the screen simply denoted which categories were available to select.

Also now the graphics for the anime's are about half the size of the original, making it an eyesore for anyone attempting to appreciate or gauge whether they're really interested in a certain anime. I' admit I'm heavily a visual person, so I usually only read the synopsis of a title if the artwork looks interesting.

Anyone else feel that it was an unnecessary change? I think a "CR-classic layout" option would be cool to release to people who aren't real keen on the current app. That way us oldies who strongly preferred the original can still utilize it.

I'm sad because I thought this was going to resolve the problems that started last week where app would exit. Now it says there's a playback error, no matter what I do. The last time I had this many issues with the Roku, they said that I need to buy a newer model to keep up with Crunchyroll's App, so I "upgraded" to the Roku 1 last year. Worked fine until last week, and Crunchyroll is the only reason I own a Roku. I downloaded another app (Crackle) just to make sure the issue wasn't internet connection related. Videos play fine in that app.

I will say i don't like the new queue page the icons and blurb are too small i liked the last version with the larger icons. Also I'm sad that the info bar doesn't exist anymore.

Agree, especially with the icons, I think could be bigger. I have to squint a bit to make out finer detail even wearing my glasses.

Edit: It also just occurred to me. The utilization of free space on this app is horrendous. It's a complete OCD nightmare to go to the episode list of an anime to see only about 10% of the entire TV screen being made use of. Small episode icons at the very top to scrolls through, and an endless sea of depressing grey under it. It's definitely not as comfy of a user experience to me.

It seems like this whole app is marketed for people watching anime on their smartphone. But do a majority of people really want to watch 720 or 1080P videos on a tiny little screen the size of their palm when they have access watching it on a large screen at home?

Granted all of my issues with the app are aesthetic in nature. But I would like to think that aesthetic direction taken in a visual media-entertainment market is pretty important.

Nice, very swish and clean. It seems to run more snappy than the older app as well. The forward and rewind preview and control is a big improvement. I also like the new layout, especially the box that pops up with a brief synopsis of the series and the fact that you can search by genre and generally find what you want without endlessly scrolling. The watched history in the queue menu is also a nice feature.

I have 341 shows in my queue, so I have to hit the >> button 68 times in order to reach the end of the list, where I keep all of the simulcast anime.
Before the jump function went all to way to the end, which worked perfectly, but now it accomplishes little to nothing.
Could you restore the jump function to how it was, or at least increase it to a more reasonable amount than simply jumping by 5?
Aside from that, I'm liking the changes.

Thank you for finally restoring proper Roku UI functionality. The update from August 2014 may have added 1080P support, but it was utter crap to use.

Yep the last version seemed to basically be a port of the old PS3/4 version at the time with little regard for controls. Worst of all they took the genre filters away. Now I can stop using my phone to find anime to watch that isn't simulcast since I browse by genre to avoid anime overload on choices.

I like how there is a bookmark overlay on the thumbnails that are already in my shows when I'm browsing the catalog. I also enjoy the skip that does not go to the end of list. I love that the * button is the info/setting button. Having play/pause button in that role was always weird.

Love the native Roku forward/rewind controls. I appreciate what the last version tried to accomplish, but skipping past intros was always a gamble and less precise in the last version.

What I don't like:
Thumbnails are too small. It would be great to have 5 cover thumbnails (portrait ratio) across instead of 6. Then also 4 episode thumbnails (landscape ratio) across instead of 5. This would make them bigger and cover up more screen.

Ideas:
While I hated the skip to last jump, I know others are really going to miss it. So how about a skip to next screen on press and then skip to the end on press and hold.

While more precise forward/rewind controls were added, the app lost the skip to next/previous episode function while watching an episode. Perhaps the A and B buttons could be utilized for that.

All in all an upgrade to a true Roku app. Very nice .

I have an account, however this latest Roku update doesn't have a login screen. It keeps offering me a chance for a two-week free trial, and another premium account. I don't want a second premium account. I want the premium account that I already have to work correctly.
