because no matter what anyone says, no matter how used to it people claim to be, they still expect others to do good things and are still surprised by bad things.

That's an interesting perspective. Bad news is popular because it's surprising and we take good news for granted.

Bad things are more entertaining. People prefer drama series over nature documentaries etc.

Seems like it's more fun to talk about people getting shot than some dude helping an old lady cross the road.

There's actually a word for it: negativity bias.
