Studying for the GRE, I found something out. I have a thirst to learn new words. Big and unique words that you don't hear often. This goes for all languages.

Serendipity and malign are just a few random words that I just adore.

Do any of you have a thirst to learn new words? Do you find it insulting when people use fancy vocabulary around you, or do you find it endearing?

If you do like learning new words, what are some of your favorite words?

Nothing wrong with learning new vocabulary, But using big words or dead terms to make you sound smart kinda makes you a douche.

As long as I can understand what you're saying, I don't care how big the words you use.

IMHO big words should be used when writing an essay or a resume or something along the lines. But when in a social conversation, you should use words that are pretty norm.

Depends what I'm doing and who I'm talking to. I enjoy looking up words I don't know or haven't seen before, and I don't mind people using them in interesting conversations and debates where it's called for.

However, fuck those people that talk to others with an excessive use of nontrivial diction with the intent to confuse or demean. Some people use their knowledge of vocabulary to be asinine condescending fuckwits and I don't care for it then.

I talk to people casually and formally depending on what's appropriate. I usually talk on the same level as who I'm talking with. Not above or below. When I'm gaming it's bruh talk and that just utilizes a bunch of profanity typically. Like "Dude" "Wtf" "Shit" "Holy fuck" "Omg" "I'm going to kill him" *insert a bunch of maniacal laughing and shouting

Nah, in fact i find it interesting hearing words that i'm not familiar with being used somewhere other than literary works.

Some that i've been tossing around lately are the words ubiquitous and lackadaisical

Asinine - Another word I adore.

On a side note. I usually do that as well. By that I mean matching my vocabulary with who I am talking too. Such as the word cleavage. I have stared at cleavage for hours on end. Sometimes for up to 5 hours! It depends who you talk to what that means though. Geologists - Cleavage is the plane along which a rock will break due to weaker bonds. Normal people - One of the best things to exist.

I do on occasion use a word that I think is lower leveled, but pisses people off. One such word is malign. I used that and got yelled at.

So, since you share a love for words. Shoot a few of your favorite at me. I would like to learn some fun new words (hopefully).

Two fun words! I haven't really used ubiquitous.. but I use lackadaisical a good bit. Usually to describe myself *cough*

I can be incredibly unenthusiastic lol. "Hey Alma, lets go to Schlitterbahn!" Sure... *yawn*

A few new words for you (maybe new).

Bilious - Bad mood
Dilettante - Novice/Amateur/Beginner

Sure it's awesome learning new words. Like others have said though, I hate people that use them to demean and feel superior to others.

Like that middle one. Had to look it up. Used Latin roots for the first. Knew the last. All good words!

Also, I would have never guessed the meaning of that middle one. I shall now know what to use to mess with some of my female friends.
