Without the risk of starting a war, there's far too little of this:

To be fair, the "point" of Evangelion is difficult to sort out given all the philosophical and religious window dressing (not that it was all window dressing). Also, the sexual images were basically inevitable when it was decided the characters' costumes would basically be glorified wetsuits.

Anyway I love this piece of fanart. Asuka looks like a fucking badass.

I like what they've done with just about everyone here.

The religious stuff was pretty much window dressing. Looks cool as fuck though.

You bet.

So, since you mentioned it and I (like most people) have difficulty setting it to a singular answer, what is the point the series is supposed to be making? Loving yourself and having confidence is the first and most critical step to success and happiness? Life is pain, but pain can be harnessed? The show sends a lot of mixed messages, especially if you take EoE into account.

I think EOE and the show ended up having different messages.

The shows original ending is one of "at the end of the day only you can be the one who makes yourself happy". And EOE is "Otaku culture is shit". I love the message of EOE because its overall a really scathing but true takedown of Fanboy culture.

Honestly this is probably the best interpretation ive seen.

I nailed it with the show! I feel good.

EoE, however, I struck out on.

Incidentally, I really like this reviewer. His presentation is unique, his points are well-substantiated and logically flow, he's good. Thanks for introducing me to him.

I tend to forget, but when first watching the series Asuka really comes across as a jerk.
But I guess anyone who speaks German can't really be a bad person. ;)

I agree, different messages. Although, I feel like EoE's first half was mostly about shocking the audience.
I had never watched anything with an ending like that before, it was very unexpected. They did hint at it in the TV ending, but... I still think it was trolling.

If your referring to Shinji masturbating over Asuka thats pretty clear a "otaku are shit" moment.

I think pretty much everything in and about the film was deliberately provocative, but especially the first half ("air") before it all goes into Shinji's mind theater. Before I saw EoE, I had never watched some entertainment where the main characters fail to save the planet and where every character is brutally killed off (more or less).
