Real Talk! Why is so many anime so "sexist"
Posted 12/12/15 , edited 1/13/16
Alright imma get right to the point. I have been noticing lately (and its dead obvious) that the newer animes have been over sexualizing women waaaay to much then neccesarry. Now Ecchi anime have been around since anime came out. And I have nothing against the genre of ecchi anime but some animes such as Sword Art Online have been going way overboard with their fanservice to the point where the animators or mangakas aren't even taking this seriously. I mean just take High School of the Dead as an example. In just 5 episode in I have no clue what they are fighting for when most of the time I'm shoved with fanservice. A lot of these anime have soo much potential but they kill the show with its false depictions of overly secualized women/girl. Heck at times it feels like I'm watching p0rn and well an anime should not feel like that. Maybe its just me but what do you guys think? In all honestly I believe the company is going too far with this!

Fanservice in of itself isn't bad. It does however become a problem if it's overused to the point that the female characters have no reason to be on screen other that titillating the audience or when the show outright fetishizes sexual assault.

You're sort of cherry picking series here, one of which is from 2010, and the other from 2012 and not even really ecchi at all in reality. SAO's notoriety only stems from the fact that a large segment of people in the west thought it was going to be an edgy kids shonen adventure show, when it is in reality far more pandering to otaku. If you really think that is a good example of ecchi gone overboard, then I think you aren't watching enough anime

As someone who goes season to season and frequents the various comedy/romance/harem sub genres (which is where you'll find your most egregious offenders). I actually think that things have been a little less ecchi this last year or so. Especially this season with so many mysteries airing. Sure, we still have the generic ecchi harems like Shomin Sample on the air. But it should be expected to always have at least a few of those around.

As far as fanservice goes, I think CGDCT moe fare is still going strong obviously with titles like Is the order a rabbit? and Non Non Biyori. But those aren't truly ecchi by any means. A sexism argument could be made for that genre as well I guess. But these days, everything is sexist so...whatever. I'll just keep watching what I like I guess.

The short answer to the question in your title: Anime is sexist because Japan has a culture that is sexist by Western standards.

Fanservice can be an equal opportunity game since there is sexualization of both male and female characters . You can't really call it inherently sexist. What is sexist is the constant lack of personality and agency that females usually have in the shows. They're usually archetypes rather than characters and they are typically infantilized or rendered irrelevant by male characters. There are notable exceptions to this, of course.

My suggestion to you would be to stop "powering through" shows that have so much fanservice that it bothers you and look for shows that match your palette a little better. They're out there.

Let people make what they want to make. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

Yeah I'm ok with the fanservice! honestly a lot of anime has them and that's perfectly fine. It's there work so I can understand that. But there times where I watch an anime such as Sword Art Online and I can't help but criticize it for its lack of characterization for the women in the show. At times they just feel like they're there for the male audience. But yeah it all just depends on your taste in a show. I guess I just don't like anything that's ecchi so I get offended lol^^ good talk!

I don't know the more I watch the less I think its sexist. I mean when the main character is denying the attention it shifts the sexual power over to the women. I don't see how show women as sexually empowered and in control of what they want is sexist.

Alot of anime treats women in a very backwards way. This has to do with the fact that nowadays the anime market is largely based on merch so portraying your females as sex objects and cardboard cut outs is gonna give you a much bigger profit among the kawaii body pillow fanbase. That being said its always been bad. So many 90s anime treated there women like shit with them constantly being victimized abused and sexually assault. Real ugly stuff was happening. Either way the anime market should really try to create more anime that appeals to women. I for one think theres a huge amount of shoujo stuff that is absolutely fantastic and deserves an adaptation.

The problem as I see it has always been one of balance. In a vacuum fanservice is not that bad but when its almost all females are portrayed as it becomes a problem.
