....

How many times, and in how many topics, has this question been asked?

Yeah I'm ok with the fanservice! honestly a lot of anime has them and that's perfectly fine. It's there work so I can understand that. But there times where I watch an anime such as Sword Art Online and I can't help but criticize it for its lack of characterization for the women in the show. At times they just feel like they're there for the male audience. But yeah it all just depends on your taste in a show. I guess I just don't like anything that's ecchi so I get offended lol^^ good talk!

SAO is poorly written in comparison to even other self-indulgent harems. Don't compare things to SAO, you are going to have a bad time.

Japanese hack writers have rape and exploitation fetishes. You run into something by a hack writer, you are going to get a lot of that crap.

Actually this is slightly different. This is asking why not is. The question posed assumes sexism in anime does it exist.

Um no. Any person can tell a difference between is and why.

There is a market for ecchi anime, so there is an industry for ecchi anime.

There is a market for porn, so there is a porn industry.

The short answer to the question in your title: Anime is sexist because Japan has a culture that is sexist by Western standards.

I was going to say something similar to this! ^

And anyone who has paid attention will know that people have asked "why" plenty of times. This isn't any different.

True lately the anime fanbase have been geared towards more nudity in anime. So I can see why most companies would want to sexualized their female characters so that they can make a huge profit out of it. That being said ecchi anime is just not my taste and I find fanservice to be sesitive even though I'm a guy lol. I just hope that the anime industry stop the over use of fanservice in their anime.

Really you might as well ask "Why is there a woman in a bikini trying to sell me a car"?

Sex sells, always has no matter what part of the world you are in.

Added to that, Japan is a nation where a woman can be Vice presedent at a company but she is still expected to serve tea to all the men at the meetings. I gather Korea is even worse.

In North America is has taken decades of fighting to bring gender equality up to where it is now and it's still an issue.

To be honest Anime runs from one extreem to another. If you think Sword Arts or High school of the Dead are bad, take a look at something like Valkyrie Drive. I couldn't bring myself to go more than 2 episodes.

From that however go to the Perfect Insider.

or Jojo's Bizzar Adventure

or a comfortable middle ground like World Trigger

or Fairy Tail where a character like Erza can be both sexy and strong

Gender Equality is an ongoing fight, and as Manga and anime are becoming more global they are adapting as well. The role of female characters has changed a lot. Take a look at Ushio and Tora. It's a new anime at the moment but the original source material was written in the 90s. Compair the roles of the female characters in that to more recent manga like My Hero Academia.

Girls in Shonen action have gone from the back rank cheerleaders to the front ranks fighting side by side with the boys.

Even if we do still get the Hot springs scenes.
