Do you watch OVA's

Not really.

I'll only watch the OVAs if it's from an anime I really, really like.

Only if it continues the story or is a side story that is canon to the series.

Sometimes, the OVAs are more imaginative than the main series. Tenchi Muyo is a prime example of why you should watch a few. And like a side Manga, well written ones can branch out a character.

Like most have said, it really depends on the show. I really enjoyed the ones from Fullmetal Alchemist, but, in general, I really only watch them if they are canon and/or further the main story in some way.

Some OVA's are essential.

Mirai Nikki and the most recent To Love-Ru, for example.

It depends whether we are talking about actual OVA series or OVA special episodes of pre-existing series

I haven't seen any completely-unrelated-to-another-series OVA series (as far as I can remember...) but I generally watch the OVAs of any series I watch, or try to anyway (same with DVD specials and recaps etc. because I'm a loser)

OVAs to watch out for are the ones that are part of an existing series, but tell a side-story, like the recent Tokyo Ghoul: Jack OVA (which I may actually have enjoyed more than the actual series), and of course, the king, the Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA (Tsuiokuhen?) which made me cry like a little girl

there are some which you kind of have to watch, like the 6 original To Love-Ru OVAs, as the second season doesn't really make sense without having previously watched them, and I don't really like this approach as I view it as limiting, but even if this is the case, they are generally quite good

typical OVAs, as in, ones based on previously unadapted chapters of the manga that aren't necessary to the story can go either way - usually they are pretty good in my opinion, but often slightly less so than the series of which they are spinoffs (as with Durarara!!, Ace of the Diamond etc.)

and then there's things like the Testament of Sister New Devil OVA

speaking of OVAs has anyone watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes? I kind of want to watch it since everywhere heralds it as amazing, but I don't know if I can set aside enough time to watch 110 episodes of anything at the moment (I need to speed binge Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Magi and Hakuouki in time for Spring 2016 lol)

EDIT: ok I just saw at least one comment about Legend of the Galactic Heroes, my bad
