Which of these two was overall a better movie series?

Both had Gollum but the Hobbit has Smaug, so no contest ha ha.
No really, I liked the Hobbit much better, the characters and script was just so much better, I thought.

I think I prefer LOTR because it's just so epic! Now don't get me wrong I loved the hobbit, but the first three movies just have a strong place in my heart

the lord of the ring series was way better, the hobbit was pretty disappointing to me , you have smaug which created so much build up in the second movie, only to have him die in the first 30 mins of the 3rd film. The love between Gilly and Tauriel made no sense, they basically just met on day one felt like they had something in common and were left chasing after each other, also the war in the last hobbit movie has nothing on the two towers or the return of the king..... " the dawfs are rallying".... for real?! like for Real?! just the lamest battle. Also a note did not read the lord of the rings trilogy or the hobbit.

I've only seen LOTR and that's because my dad forced me to watch it. I haven't been made to watch the Hobbit...yet

The simerelion. Just kidding its long and boring. It's more a history book for middle earth, than something to read for entertainment.

Hobbit is better in every sense, and always has been in book form. Might be a little too long, but the LOTR is just plain boring once you get past the first hour. The Hobbit is a good adventure story, LOTR is just a mess, and stops being an adventure after they get to Bree.

Regarding the movies, Peter Jackson even claims that The Hobbit was a mess. One does not simply compartmentalize 1 book into 3 2 and a half hour movies, not if you want it to be any good. They spent over 10 years in preparation for LOTR. Damn shame. Though, I'm sure that even if he spent a decade preparing for The Hobbit that it still wouldn't compare.

I agree, the Hobbit is just filled with so much comedy gold. It doesn't matter if they spent more time planning out LotR, the source material did not adapt well to filmmaking or the guy in charge of it wanted to make it more serious (boring) than it needed to be.

Lotr in book and movie form. I will admit my expectations for the lotr films we're high because I enjoyed the book so much and I was a little disappointed but not as disappointed as I was in the hobbit films. Those were terrible compared to the book. They should have made 2 movies at most, never three. Plus lotr is just more expanded and interesting in every sense.
