if you like RPGs in the slightest, absolutely check out Xenoblade Chronicles X. It's hard to classify as a JRPG or WRPG (granted, Monolith Soft is a Japanese studio, so strictly speaking it's a JRPG); the battle system is real-time but has turn-based-esque elements whereas the open-world nature is more reminiscent of WRPGs like Elder Scrolls. This game came out... on december 2nd or 3rd and I already sank 70 hours into the game. Game is 1P only, btw.

Past that, Smash, Splatoon, and Mario Kart provide a lot of general Nintendo fun. Splatoon is online-only, so you have to like online games. The matches are short (I think turf wars is 4 minutes per round?) and is very original and fun to play. Smash and Mario Kart are, well, Smash and Mario Kart. While the Wii U version is probably the definitive versions of each respective franchise, That said, you will buy and get what you expect. If you like multiplayer-focused titles, this is worth checking out.

Also, Splatoon does not have any worthwile offline multiplayer mode. Yes, a 2P mode exists, but the general consensus is that its absolutely terrible. Since your husband got you this gift, I figured offline 2P options are worth mentioning. Mario Kart 8 allows 2P both offline against CPUs or online against humans. A lot of Smash's "solo" modes have a 2P element (e.g., classic mode is 2P).

If you like platformers, there's no shortage--and probably the only instance "no shortage of content" and "Wii U" can be used in the same sentence. Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros U, Woolly World, and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze all have 2P modes and are great platformers. Unless you absolutely must have a 2D platformer, I'd recommend 3D World. NSMB U is probably the second-best option because it felt like it was developed with 2P in mind. Woolly World is fun, and if Tropical Freeze is anything like its precessor, I'd imagine its a fun game too.

Bayonetta 1/2 exist. They're actually really great games; and the first Bayonetta is bundled wtih the second and are wroth $60. That said, I'm not sure how comfortable I feel recommending them as a "first" Wii U title; they're single-player games, and while they're fun to play, unless you're really engrossed in the battle system or must have perfect scores, there's not much reason to play after beating the story.

Then there's Hyrule Warriors. This has a weird 2P set-up, but (almost all?) modes are 2P--however, one person must use the gamepad. The game is hard to dscribe, unless you're already familiar with the Dynasty Warriors series. The combat isn't much to write home about, but most of the joy comes in running around the battlefield to eliminate key targets and secure vital positions. If you like the game, there's no shortage of content. Worth checking out. I think I've spent 70 hours on this game as well, and have only touched the first DLC pack (out of the three major ones).

That's all the major titles off the top of my head. If I had to rank my top three Wii U games in no particular order, it'd be xenoblade x, splatoon, and hyrule warriors.

My friend has one and he would strongly suggest Super Smash Bros, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, any Legend of Zelda game and his favorite Bayonetta

Thank you everyone! As the games start dropping in price, I now have a solid list of WiiU games to buy, thanks to all of your help.

So far, I've gotten Super Mario Maker, which is getting more fun the more I play it. I also got Super Smash Bros. and I have Warriors Orochi Hyper, which I got for $8 at my local GameStop just for buying Mario.

I got Super Smash Bros in time for the Cloud DLC, so I ended up getting a few eShop cards, so I could have the DLC fighters on both my Wiiu and 3DS copies. Seeing Ryu vs. Sonic vs. Mario vs. Mega Man is a childhood dream come true!

Warriors Orochi Hyper has a learning curve to it. I'm embarrassed to say I'm still on the first level, where I can't kill the Hydra very easily.

I'm also loving the virtual console choices. I missed out on Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario World and Zelda: Link to the Past when they were first out, so I'm glad I finally get to play them now. Trying to decide what my next Virtual Console title should be, I have my eyes on Paper Mario.

I'm still always open to playing Smash, Splatoon, and Mario Kart if you're ever interested.

Nintendo updates the Nintendo eShop every Thursday, and most weeks have included at least one Virtual Console game. Paper Mario is a great choice, but what you'll really need to get when they become available are Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario RPG; Legend of the Seven Stars.
