So I've always wanted to try playing one of the Japanese dating sim games like you see in different anime series....You know, where you start playing the game and you have to trigger the characters "Flags" so you can get the happy ending, but I wouldn't even know where to begin....Anywhere I can go to download some that are English subbed? MY inner curiosity has been peaked.

You mean the routes like in a visual novel? So an otome game basically?

Well, I hear Hakuoki is one I hear that is pretty good, you can play this one almost anywhere now, mobile, steam, ps vita/psp, ps3.

They have Amnesia now released off of steam, and ps vita. Be wary because there are some awkward weird moments in that one where the males are kind of creepy.

Hah. Well so I fail and released halfway through the post that you are actually a male, so I don't know if Otome games would be a thing for you or not. I tried to google the opposite of otome games, and it showed Bishojo games, but apparently a lot of them include pornography content in them..
But safer ones would be games like Harvest moon, persona 3/4, thousand arms, rune factory, that I know where you can play as a male and having dating elements. But they have other stuff included in them -- not sure if this what you are looking for.

Firstly, Thank you for trying to find what you could for me. The pornography bit doesn't really bother me, I've reached the age in life where nudity (Animated or Realistic) is just kind of "whatever" lol, If I can't reach out and grab it it does nothing for me. I'll give the few above you mentioned a look Thanks a ton.

J-List sells some Japanese dating sim games with English subtitles (though the screenshots on most of them are definitely straying into the Ecchi territory).

I have also seen posts here that say there are Japanese games on Steam and it shows you somewhere whether they are subtitled or not (I have never used Steam as I am paranoid about installing software that monitors your system).

J-List and Mangagamer are two starting points, and both Steam and Play-Asia are places to look as well. Another spot to look if you're interested in free software to play with is Newgrounds, and there's also a massive indie development scene for these sorts of games using the Ren'Py engine. The Ren'Py website actually has a list of these games available for your reference, too, so it's not difficult to find these. Finally, there is a visual novel database (that's what it's called, too) that you can use to get an idea of what is out there, when it was released, where it was released, who its publisher(s) is/are, some character descriptions, and what sort of quality you can expect from a particular title.

I very strongly urge you to look up reviews of any title you're interested in before you purchase, because there are a number of games out there that are of especially low quality whose price will not reflect this. And I don't mean they're subjectively of low quality, like the story had things some people wouldn't like. I mean games where the options and consequences don't logically connect to one another, the images look like they were put together by a kindergarten class, there are serious bugs that make certain features unusable, that sort of thing. Be very careful when you buy these, because they can range from $20-60 for standard packages and even more if they're special edition releases that come with all sorts of extras.

I've never actually seen one quite that bad make it past quality control (and wow, a $126.00 sticker price?), but I'm sure it has happened before.

So, "Dating Sim" can mean a couple different things.

In any case, as a first step, I would recommend you check out three sites:

Fuwanovel.net
Jast.usa
Mangagamer.com

Most of what you will see on those sites are "visual novels"--text heavy games, where most of the "game play" involves occasional choices that affect how the story progresses. (Also, most of the games on them are 18+, so be warned.)

Of course, that might not be exactly what you are looking for. Many games that people call "dating sims" involve a bit more player interaction than your average visual novel. They involve taking girls on dates, giving them gifts, etc. If you want to see what one of those looks like, check out either Sunrider Academy or Roommates on Steam. (Both are flawed, though in different ways--also, Sunrider Academy is HARD, unless you turn the difficulty settings way down.) You can also check out a game called "HuniePop", which is a combination DatingSim/Match Game, which is shockingly addictive (the mature version is on mangagamer; the PG13 version on Steam).

Katawa Shoujo is in English and it's free.

Yeah. I think that one's considered a visual novel. Just started that today and I became easily fascinated by the story line. Love Emi
