While fixing the guest pass redemption is no doubt on CR's "To do" list, I have to wonder if it very high on that list.

The pessimistic side of me thinks they may have taken this extended outage as an opportunity to look at whether the guest passes appear to have had any measurable positive effect on converting people to subscribers (which was their intended purpose). If the new subscriber rate seems unaffected, or even worse, had a slight uptick during this period, I could see why they wouldn't be in a hurry to fix it.

I personally expect guest passes don't have all that big of direct impact on the subscriptions either way. I think the biggest benefit to CR is that at least some subscribers enjoy giving out their guest passes, so it's perk that keeps some subscribers happy. If they wanted statistics, presumably they could look at how many accounts went from guest passes to paid, but I suppose it's possible their system isn't configured to make that easy, so maybe they are using the opportunity as TheAncientOne surmised.

My personal guess as to why it's taking longer is that the guest passes broke as they were rushing to fix or implement some other feature (ie gift subscriptions) in the store, since it sounds kind of like guest passes go through the same system as store purchases. Particularly with the Christmas holiday, making sure that "other feature(s)" were working was too important to just revert the changes, and with the general chaos of the holidays and people taking vacation, I can imagine they couldn't devote people to fixing it. With that theory, the chances of fixing it should increase in the upcoming week, but who knows what will happen.

Well, I've given out 34 so far, each to a different person, all but perhaps 2 or 3 at most were given randomly in the guest pass thread. I just checked and 8 of those redeeming them are currently premium members; not quite 1/4, but almost. Since redemption of the free ones hasn't been working for well over a week now, those must all be legit subscribers.

I can't claim that the guest passes were, in fact, the actual cause, but there's at least a significant correlation.
