SPOILERS
Run while you can

Well, I couldn't find any old discussion threads for the first season so I'll just make my own! I finished the first season today and I wanted to give my thoughts on it, feel free to do the same.

Everyone wasn't lying that Jojo was a great show. A satire on the shounens and western action movies, but at the same time being more than just a simple satire by investing you into the ridiculousness and insanity. Despite being cliched to the bone and pretty much doing every trope in the book, it takes by the horns and just owns it. Jojo knows exactly what type of show it is, but it is also manages to make something special and even compelling in the process.

To tell you the truth, I thought people overrating this series, from the outside it just seemed like a strange, sausage fest shounen wet dream. Deep down I had a feeling I'd like it, but there was a part of me that resented this show and I can't pin point exactly why that is. Maybe the happenings in the tourneys did that to me.

Anyways, Phantom Blood was a great introductory arc that really set the tone for the series. Jonathon Joestar was the man and a true gentlemen. I loved the contrast between Jojo and Dio, and all the new things that were introduced in this first arc like Hamon, vampires, the mask, etc. Plus Jojo's dad was a really great guy and left a good impression on Jojo. The Joestars have good blood in them! They're rich, but are compassionate and strong-willed people. Zeppelin *ahem* Zeppeli, Speedwagon, Erina, Tom Petty *ahem* Tonpetty and Dio were all interesting characters in their own right. Zeppeli was pretty badass and died like a champ and Speedwagon made everything 10x more dramatic than they actually were and it was great. The first arc was just so electrifying and awesome, it got you on board real fast. The cliche romance between Jojo and Erina and even Jojo's sudden death were all done well done, and made for a great and sad conclusion. Jonathon was a great guy and risked everything to save his family and end Dio.

Now onto Battle Tendency which I have a lot to say about. This was an awesome arc and definitely thickened the plot, the characters, and the setting. The fights were awesome and Joseph developed into a great character. Joseph and Jonathon I think are equally awesome, just in different ways. I loved how Joseph was always thinking ahead, goofy, and showed the Pillar Men who was boss. And Caesar was the a total player, but had a good heart and is probably the coolest bubble user you'll ever see. His death was even sadder than his dad's I hope this isn't the end of the Zeppelis! I remember Caesar said he had siblings.

Lisa Lisa, aka Elizabeth, was a great character and it was a nice twist that she ended up being Jojo's mom.

And she's got to be the hottest 50 year old I've seen in anime! Hot momma! It was funny because in around episode 18 or 19 I wondering this show has a lot of manservice and then bam that Lisa Lisa bath scene! Hot damn! I that's what I needed! Lol, Jojo was peeking at his own mom Ignorance is bliss I guess hahahahaha. And Elizabeth was just a badass, she would have wrecked The Cars *ahem* Kars if he didn't cheap shot her.

And I'm so glad that Elizabeth didn't die and that Joseph learned the truth at the end. Plus I just loved learning of the history of Joseph's dad and Elizabeth. I was wondering if we'd get to see what Joseph's dad looked like. I know the romances in the anime are super cliched and all, but I just like them a lot! OK!? Elizabeth and George looked so happy together A very sad fate that awaited them.

Also haha, the romance between Joseph and Suzie Q was great I loved how it was initiated and I thought it was "cute" when Joseph said goodbye to her in Venice. I also thought for sure she was screwed when AC/DC *ahem* Esidisi possessed her. I'm glad that wasn't the case because she was entertaining.

The ending in general was just great. I loved the whole misunderstanding and how Suzie Q didn't tell anyone that Joseph was alive LOL! I'm glad that everyone had fulfilling lives at the end. Elizabeth got married to a screenwriter, Smokey became a politician/mayor, Speedwagon lived a quite life single, and of course Joseph and Suzie Q had a happy marriage and gave birth to a daughter. Joseph finally broke the the Joestar tradition of dying young, I'm glad he broke fate.

And it seems like Joseph is still awesome, even as an old man. His final lines at the end of the series were hilarious. And I agree with him, why did his daughter marry a Japanese guy!? I liked how the series was all western people, but now looks like the trend is broken. And I'm not sure how I'll like the new Jojo.... he seems troubled.

Anyways, the series had phenomenal animation and artstyle. I loved all the color changes, moving pictures, and manga words floating in the air. Everything was smooth and beautiful. Plus it had great music, there was even some dubstep in there (primarily during the Joseph vs Wham *ahem* Wamuu). And Roundabout as the ED? YES PLEASE. When was the last time a classic rock song ever in an anime? Oh right, never (inb4 someone corrects me on that). Plus the villains were all great in their own way. Dio and Kars being the biggest bastards ever, Esidisi being just a total oddball, and my favorite being Wamuu. I like honorable warrior types like him. They're all great villains for different reasons and I like good villains.

Overall, it was an awesome show and I look forward to starting part 3. 9/10

Glad you liked it, Loomy. I still haven't finished Stardust Crusaders but I have enjoyed what I have seen so far. I only have 13 more episodes left to watch.

Jotaro is japanese (well, half anyway), but Stardust Crusaders is a travel around the world story and only the first three episodes are set in Japan.

It does have a pretty awkward start however; a brand new concept (Stands instead of the Hamon) is introduced and it's not until nearly halfway through that the author realizes how much creative potential it has.

Though glad to hear you enjoyed part 1 and 2! Now you have more or less three months to catch up with the rest in time for the Part 4 adaptation which is quite the fan favorite in the west, despite being 100% set in Japan.

You realize a lot of these shounen tropes you're referring to were started with JoJo, right? Phantom Blood was written nearly 30 years ago and JoJo is really popular with creative types in the manga and anime industries.

So glad you liked it after all the pestering we've been giving you about watching it.

Stardust Crusaders is on the long side and the best part is the last third so it is good for marathoning like Shwu said. Once you've done that you'll be gtg for Part IV in April.

If you end up loving Part 3 and really want more, check out the rest of the parts from the Manga. Even for the parts you've seen it's still worth reading because the artwork is just that good.

I like Jotaro. People always giving him crap for being unemotional but he's just reserved. He's also probably the most reliable and TCOB JoJo of the bunch. Maybe he'll get more love when people see him in Part IV.

It's not that he's bad. It's just the cast surrounding him are just better personality wise (especially Polnareff and Old Man Joseph). It's the same with Part 4 as well, which has a ton of great characters

Yeah as was already pointed out, JoJo's may seem cliche, but it created most of those cliches, everyone else just copied it.

As for the EDs, that's one of the recent JoJo's anime's calling cards. All the JoJo's EDs so far have been songs from decades ago. The first season's ED was, as you already know, "Roundabout", the second season's ED is "Walk Like an Egyptian", and the third season's ED is "Last Train Home". All three are great EDs.

And we all can't wait to hear what the ED for Part IV will be! That's part of our pre-season hype train. Place your bets now.

Like I've once said, Jotaro becomes more entertaining once you interpret him as a regular teenager who tries WAY too hard to be edgy and badass and the reason why he doesn't talk much is because he's too busy making up cool one liners in his head.

But I think the main issue people have with him is that the previous hero was Joseph who started out from scratch and at the end of his journey, he wasn't that much stronger but won with his wits alone. Then you have Jotaro who starts out OP, then becomes super OP

Well, this probably isn't the place to dive too deeply into Jotaro's character since Loomy hasn't even started SC. I think maybe I have a better opinion of Jotaro than anime-only watchers because I've seen how his character develops later on. Can't really say.

Oh but Loomy, I forgot to mention that I love Lisa Lisa's backstory. She was an adult woman who had started a traditional family when her husband was murdered but instead of getting all weepy she put the baby down, got up and went out to kill the guy who did it. For a shounen series in the 80's that is extremely progressive.

Especially considering that, at the time, Araki didn't feel confident in his ability to write female characters.
