Yeah in Japan it's usually all together, if not you can just buy it separately anyway. As for Blu Ray, it's not some clever ploy lol. If you have a big TV, Blu Ray will look a lot better as the resolution is higher. Also for a lot of anime titles now they sometimes remaster or redraw entire scenes to look better / more atmospheric for Blu Ray. Other times there are extras too.

I've seen blu-ray dvds and they look exactly the same as my normal ones. In fact sometimes my normal ones look better since I have a huge TV. It's the tv that makes it HD, not the disc itself.

"remastered" and redrawing whole scenes? I just don't buy that. And extras I'm aware of. But they should include those on the normal dvd rather than using them to trick people into buying the blu-ray

Depending on your TV, YES. It would be pointless for me to purchase blu-ray... because my TV cannot get the quality from it.

However... the difference in quality is usually NOT worth the difference in price, especially for animation. That is my opinion, of course... but that is why I would NOT buy blu-ray. If you feel it is worth it, we value our money and entertainment differently, I guess.

Had a roommate who bought nothing but blu-ray. He had a good enough TV for it, too. Meh.

Yes. I am not advocating that it is worth the price difference. I am just saying that the difference is there. For the record, I don't have a Blu-ray player either.

If you have a huge TV, then Blu Ray will look better. DvD is up to 576p resolution. Whereas Blu Ray is 1080p. I don't need to argue that 1080p is a lot better. Example I have a 42' 1080p TV, a DvDs native resolution is quite small compared to that. So that image needs to be stretched to fill the TV. A 1080p Blu Ray just fits, so there is no major stretching and pixel density remains native thus, looking much more sharp / crisp.

And they do redraw scenes for some shows. The Monogatari series is one of them. Tokyo Ghoul or others that show gore can be censored or darkened a lot on those scenes, but on Blu Ray it's redrawn to show it in fuller detail for example. Fate Stay is another show where the lighting is improved a lot to. Not every anime on Blu Ray is better though. Some shows remain the exact same as DvD in terms of quality, but maybe you'll get an extra menu or something. Best place to go is here - http://www.blu-ray.com/ then you can find out if your favorite anime is worth getting on blu ray, or if there isn't much of a difference. For those that do look better though, here are some examples;

DvD

Blu Ray

Everyone bitches about something. The internet just makes it easier because you can find fans of anything no matter how obscure and you can bitch annonynmously.

Don't know about video game fans or wrestling fans...but..and I can say this as an anime fan 'cause I've done the same damn thing on other sites....Western anime fans are SPOILED.

Y'all know it. WE. Are. Spoiled.

Sorry but, but your examples are kind of BS. Why? Because resolution rarely affects tones as drastically as the Fate pictures were changed.

Looks like a commercial for Blu-ray. Some fake photos just to make people too dumb to know better buy Blu-ray.

Also.... Blu-ray can make a difference, but in anime/animation it rarely does. You DO realize that anime is usually animated in lower resolution than plain DVDs are capable of handling.... right?

In fact, I can't even tell the difference from SD to the highest on Crunchyroll's settings in most anime. Some, sure, but many it makes no difference.... because it is animated at a lower resolution, anyway.

If you read my post properly, I talk more about resolution. Like how some studios redraw some scenes, which is what you were seeing. And yes most animes are not even drawn in high resolution but that doesn't change the fact for blu ray, they can remaster it to look a lot better. Look at my 2nd image for example from an older show. As for the difference between SD/DvD and Crunchyroll's 1080p, there is still a difference, just not much as streams are compressed which does affect quality. But they are on par with DvDs quality anyway which Blu Rays are worth the money, whereas you can just watch everything else online. Essentially DvD is outdated now.

And that is an opinion. One I strongly disagree with.

You might disagree with me (for whatever reason) but it's not an opinion. Blu Ray is better. And it only costs an extra £5-£10 over DvD for most titles anyway for both movies and anime for better image, sound and sometimes bonus features.

They're must be something wrong with your tv if the image looks that dark. I have tons of normal dvd's and none of them look like that first image. As for the 1080p thing..I thought that was just an online thing. But just get a tv that's set to 1080p then, whatever that even means
