Okay.

So, I am well aware that there are LOTS of people on the internet (and in real life) who suffer from mental illness.

But there are also a lot of people who are "self diagnosing" themselves, lately.

Either because they're nervous or they want to be um, "special".

Soooo, what do you think?

Why are so many people "self-diagnosing" theirselves?

EDIT: Also, I know that not all self-diagnosers are idiots. But my point is, if you think you have something, you should probably go see a professional. And don't go waving around your possible illness like it's something you're proud of. Even if you can't afford healthcare, do your research before you can actually consider having a mental illness. But even then, like I said before, make sure you have proof, and don't act like it's something you're proud of. And if you really think you have something, try to get better, instead of (no offense) sitting around complaining, and using the term as an excuse.

And trust me, I know how hard that is, but if you legitimately think you have a problem, please, at least try to get better.

Welp, sorry for ranting but the point is, if you really do think you have a mental illness, do your research, seek help, and try to get better.

Oh yeah, and I know not all people with mental disorders are self diagnosed. I know lots of people with mental illness.

believe it or not your own thoughts can say a lot. sometimes I feel the void and I know I could get some medicine for it but I feel its best to try and shake it off. as long as I'm not suicidal

1. Self diagnosis is a cocktail of fear and ignorance.

If people feel so bad they should see their doc instead of coming to conclusions due to seeing something on WebMD.

2. Self diagnosis relieves sense of responsibility

People diagnose themselves in order to blame their own problems on something outside of their control.

As someone diagnosed by specialists at one of Europe's largest university hospitals, I find it truly annoying to read the caricature that self-diagnosing clowns perpetuate around my own disorder. So, yeah, I consider them morons.

I think the only valid self diagnosis from someone that doesn't know medicine is hypochondria.

I think self diagnosis is a bad idea. You are not a clinical psychologist dont try to be one.

Edit: I should also mention people who whine about "special snowflakes" are jackasses who I do not stand with mostly.

I believe most self-diagnose is that they do not trust doctors or believe the doctors are incompetent.

speaking as someone who's self diagnosed & been professionally diagnosed with a variety of things

you can find - as in, easily find - the exact sheets, quizzes, and documents that psychologists will give & use to diagnose you when you start discussing possible mental disorders online

drawing conclusions from those (hint: what a lot of self dx'ers do) is very valid, and definitely more possible for most people than actually visiting a psychologist. money/time/health restraints are significant in the lives of people who are looking into serious mental illnesses.

on the other hand, looking up personality disorders on wikipedia, clicking on one, and going "hey thats me" without any further research won't do much

but shitting on people who are actively attempting to help themselves isnt going to help at all, ever
