Infinite Stratos says hi.

Charlotte and Laura are the only characters that got development and... surprise of surprises, they're the most popular characters! Coincidence?

What about the main protagonist?

Kirito from SAO. It's like he follows a script for each story arc.
-Act emo because something bad is happening
-Be waaaay too overpowered for no obvious reason
-Win over heroine(s)
-Defeat bad guy in a from-behind victory
It's not even subtle character development. It's NO character development

I would like to see what Shin and Julia had to go through while trying to escape the oppression of the Syndicate, on Cowboy Bebop. The story always implies that Julia betrayed Spike but in the end she had gotten discovered, like him over desertion of the organization. We all know Spike was met with an ambush, did Julia go through something similar? She spent the next few years on the run. It must have been hell for her. Spike never investigated what might have gone wrong, insisting he was "killed by the woman he loved". She even decided to avoid contact with him, to keep him safe. Wonder if she felt abandoned by him at times? It's also suggested that Shin was working on the inside of the Syndicate, as an informant, considering he didn't like Vicious' new rule over the organization. He must have crossed paths with Julia on several occasions in order to inform her and let her escape somewhere safe. Those two must have avoided some close calls and they were at the center of the entire mess. We never get to see their development. Especially Julia, being the main character's reason for his destructive nature and all.

I used to have an issue with this too, but I think Watanabe was going for the standard "femme fatale" trope with her. Femme fatales are unfortunately never really developed because they're forced into mystery and intrigue. Thankfully it didn't take away from the series too much since Julia's appearances were few and far between, but I can see where you're coming from.

Ehh... well, to be fair most of 'em got a bit, they just didn't get enough. Like, please more than a half episode total enough.

The main character... did he really change that much, or have any moments where he pondered and found any meaning in why people are trashing stuff while riding mech suits, and why he has to trash stuff back? I'm having trouble remembering, but I suspect there's really nothing to remember.

Kudelia Bernstein from Iron-Blooded Orphans could use some work. I've been really patient so far since we're only 11 episodes in, but I want to see if she's more than a nice girl who happens to have money. Unfortunately the courses other Gundam series have taken with their female characters lead me to believe she won't be more than that, but I can dream, right?

You think some characters are in need of character development, but you hate it when villains have histories that could explain their actions? What the fucking hell man?

Now that I just got some conversation going about Accel World in a couple other threads, I am going to say Haru from Accel World

Even after he gets better and stronger he still whines and cries way too much. When he already gets the girl he whines and cries too much. Even when he technically gets multiple girls (even if he is oblivious to it) he whines and cries too much. even when he gets his powers back he whines and cries too much. Even when he gets stronger and more powerful and learns to use his powers and abilities better he whines and cries too much. It's almost like Reki Kawahara wants you to either hate or be annoyed by Haru. You're supposed to like, root and cheer for a main protag, but he has very little growth through the first anime until near the very end. And even then he constantly doubts himself.

I really hope this is fixed in the next show.

GOHAN - Dragon Ball

Do I really have to explain?! Goten and Trucks are much stronger than Gohan he's such a wuss compared to Goku and Goten! I always get annoyed when I see him fight in DB Super !
