I really want to get into MMA. I want to do it for the exercise... but that's not really the reason I am choosing MMA.

I've been in fights in my life. I've kicked butt, and had my butt kicked. I don't pick fights, though. I was always afraid to fight, though... hesitant, when I should have stood up for myself.

For example, one time when I was in high school, a senior spit on me for no other reason than his personal amusement. I did nothing because I was afraid.

So, when I turned 18, I joined the Marine Corps. I wanted to crush any fear that was inside me. And it did, for a long time. In a combat MOS with all male Marines, there aren't many fights, but there also isn't a lto of room for weakness and fear either... so, I learned to crush those... for the time being.

Now, I've been out for 6.5 years. I've had a few people threaten me physically (I live in a place where fighting is kind of common). That fear has returned. I hate it. I can't stand to live in fear.... and the only way I know to handle fear is to break myself of it... I have to crush it. I'm more afraid of living in that fear than what it is I am afraid of in the first place.

So, I want to get into MMA. Martial arts aren't enough. I need to fight. I need to take a few beatings and get comfortable with it. I need to be okay with the thought of going toe to toe with someone. You can't get that at most martial arts dojos. I don't want to bully people.... but when someone threatens to "knock my teeth out," I want to be able to look them in the eye and say "Come get some."

So, I want to get into MMA. I have some leads to get into it locally, but if anyone has any tips... or any tips on crushing this fear that is creeping back into my life... I'd really appreciate it.

EDIT: I realize that fear is not necessarily bad. I understand that everyone always has a little bit of fear. However, I am the type that cannot allow fear to make my decisions for me. That's all.

Actually got rid of my arachnophobia by learning about spiders. Where I live, there are only two types of spiders that are dangerous to humans: Brown Recluse and the Black Widow. Also, living in a house for years and years with a brown recluse infestation helped cure me of that. They still make me feel a bit uneasy... but I don't run like a little girl, and if it isn't a brow recluse or black widow, I just let them live. They help manage the population of other insects. *shrug*

I want to sign up for that amygdala removal surgery. I want to be able to coexist with spiders, because right now I'm spraying deodorant on the poor things and the drowning them by flooding the floor with water.

I watch MMA. It's pretty cool as a sport. If you want to learn how to actually win fights MMA seems like a good choice. The combination of wrestling + boxing + jujitsu is really well rounded.

I think it also probably requires a huge investment of time and effort to become proficient at these things individually, let alone being able to link it all together. No doubt it would boost your confidence though.

Not only that, but the exercise is great.

A local police officer's wife has her first fight in Shreveport sometime in the near future. Two years ago she was a bit fluffy(like me ), now she's lean and mean.

I don't want to be big time, or anything... but I would like to eventually be able to have an organized fight every once in a while.

EDITED for clarity. I don't enjoy real fights...even when I win. And I have won a few real fights, so I can say that.

All I can say is to be careful. It seems like you've lived a pretty dangerous life so far, try not to suffer any serious brain damage in the future.

Btw it's perfectly fine to be afraid. Some people even like to be afraid (horror movies and stuff). So, don't get too carried away and do something to yourself that you'd have to live with for the rest of your life, okay?

I appreciate the concern. I don't intend on being stupid with it. I'm not going to get into organized street fighting or anything. Legitimate MMA and semi-local matches is fine with me.

Also don't plan on picking any real fights.... just don't want to be afraid to if I have to.

Also, you are correct.... fear can even be a positive thing. However, I draw the line when fear starts to make my decisions for me.

you should train mma but even in mma they are people who would freeze up in a real fight . the best way to fight with out fear is to train yourself in fighting with out your heart so to speak . As in to fight with out fear you have to fight with out your heart instead of stenghting your heart to fight. you could also fight the fear by confronting it . For example you could learn muaj thai and wrestling then go to a tough neighbourhood and just act tough there or infront of a group of thugs if you keep doing that it will eventually lead to a fight if you keep getting into those fights you could breach the limits of fear. But you have to have a strong spritual side to be a true martial artist whatever that side may be becoming closer to god even if its not through orthodox relgioin would strenghten you as you could ask god to strenghten you when you see yourself as being weak. Also they are other arts that concentrate on soloey freezing up your opponenets and making you more willing to fight but masters for those arts dont really show themselves. Also your eyes make sure you have solid eyes strong eyes can destroy an opponent .

Nah.... I don't freeze in a fight... Even the ones I have lost, I lost because I was out-matched... not because I froze up.

The fear goes away after the fight starts.... but the point is that it is there before the fight, and it makes me act like a little bitch before a fight even happens. Sooooo..... I need to be in a lot of fights to get rid of that fear. As I don't feel like stacking up assault charges or ending up in the ER every weekend or getting shot or stabbed.... I think I'll stick with MMA. hahaha

Just saying "I didn't read the entire post" is easier than linking a GIF. Though "I didn't read the post" is probably more accurate.

Though, I guess when you're trying to be a dick, bigger is better.
