We got nutrition, meal budgeting and preparation covered in Home Economics starting when I was 12 as well as sewing skills. That also included sewing and crochet skills. When I was 11 the school I was in decided that girls should volunteer with the nursery for work experience. That gave a little childcare experience.

At 14 the banks came in the schools. They funded projects. We got to plan, manage and execute a project. That probably made some budding CEOs. We were all given bank accounts with a little money in them.

School let you know that they had expectations. You were there to work. Actions had consequences.

It was thought that parents would provide other training plus joining clubs and organisations like Red Cross, St. Johns Ambulance, Cadets, Bands/orchestras/choirs, Agricultural clubs, arts/crafts clubs, performing arts clubs, sports clubs/teams, sailing or nautical clubs, mechanics club etc are expected to provide the rest.

School is just an elaborate IQ test. It's not there to "teach" you anything. They deliberately engage in obscurantism and other petty things to separate the competent self-learners from those that require hand holding. It's typically those that can solve their own problems that become successful employees.

You have a point there. Universal education's goal was not to educate but to have a way to control a population. You get just enough education to help you conform.

Some of the courses taught in high school are not going to provide the average student with much he or she can really use in life. (Trig for example. Unless you end up working in one of the few fields which require those sort of calculations, really, what use is it?

Trigonometry is not going to be of use for most people.

Learning to solve problems in a logical and consistent manner, however, is a skill many lack.
Mathematics requires development of this kind of though process.

False.

Hi IQ students are actively suppressed.
Public schools encourage the mediocre, not the exceptional.

How exactly would a school district establish a curriculum for general skills? School is about offering an identical set of courses for students. There's always private schools or homeschooling if you don't like public education, but saying public schools don't teach life skills is an obvious trait their curriculum has.

From what i understand, now a days schools no longer have a fail grade, no longer keep score in sports, no best and farest and pretty much noboady is a failure and everybody is a winner?
So they are teaching kids that even if you are no good at something or even if you dont even try you dont fail or loose?
Yeah great way to prepare kids for the real world....

I have also heard that here they are now implementing resilience trainning into schools now, so thats good at least.

No, but there are hi IQ students that are repressed and destroyed by the public school system simply because they do not fit in.

I think that is an awesome proposal. Unfortunately those life skills should be taught by parents not by school. I don't see why this is not taught and an required course starting at seventh grade. My parents have always been open to us about life, the reality of life, so I was not as naive when I entered the workforce. My concern is who would be teaching those life skills. Hopefully, someone who actually knows about banking, credit, resume writing, and other such skills. Not someone who is bored with their life and wants an easy class to teach. I believe this should be outsourced instead of those tenure teachers with one foot already in the grave. Had plenty of those teachers in HS. I succeeded because I wanted to make something of myself.

Sadly most parents are pretty worthless as well. See above "what's a zipcode" question coming from a 22 year old, 20 years ago lol. I can set ignition points almost by ear good enough to get moving, but 98% of the people in the US have no idea how to do that anymore. Or put on a set of chains, change a flat tire, etc etc. I can't believe how many times I've seen a little Honda on the side of the road with a bunch of young men in it watching triple A put on their donut spare.

There will always be stupid in every generation. Perhaps that is why his parents did not bother to teach him his address because they were hoping he never returned or found his way back! I'm so mean.

Because the government run schools are trying to make you slaves.

Not self sufficient. Why else do you think college students haven't even read the constitution? School is where people go to be well trained tax slaves. They even leave you with debt like a good little pack mule!

Totally agree. You are being prepared for corporate life (slaves).
