Doesn't work on Nook HD, since you can't update the android os. Is there any way I could get some kinda older version of the app so I don't have to snag a new tablet?

Yep, that must be it. It hasn't receive a single OS update since i bough it 18 months ago. In comparison my 3 year old ipod touch has the most recent OS. My time with android is very frustrating.

There's an official Cyanogenmod build out for the Nook HD which will bring your Android up to version 4.4, which will allow you to use the app again.
See: https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_hummingbird

There is also a custom non-official build that will enable CM 12.1 for the Nook HD, which brings Android 5.1.1 to the device.

What kind of device do you own? What Android version is installed?

And now I can't watch manga on my Xyboard tablet because it is stuck at android 4.1. I hate watching on the site because every time I pause the video if crashes and I have to refresh every tab.

Depending on what model it is you might be able to put Cyanogenmod on it as well. Most of the early 4.x devices can at least go up to 4.4, if the maker never provided such update.
