Think of a situation in which you are driving. For purpose of this hypotheses, you have become boxed out at a curve. You either push the car to the right and kill the passengers inside, or you break and the drag throws you off a cliff and you yourself possibly die.

In a normal situation, the answer is not an ethical dilemma. Whatever action you take, is a primal reaction free from any malice

But consider the smart car. It can calculate and react much faster than you, and it would decide to either

A) Save its driver

or

B) Save the greater number of people

What do you think the ethical choice should be?

Here's what I think:

The number of people is irrelevant.

The passengers dying is the result of a decision that directly results in their lives ending whereas the driver dying is the result of a decision that leads to his or her death by proxy. In other words, the smart car has to choose between a decision to end the passengers' lives and a decision to that puts the driver in a lethal situation but does not directly result in his or her death.

Since the smart car would be directly responsible for the passengers dying but not the driver, then the driver dying would be the optimal outcome.

Number of people is only relevant if situation is something like "The smart car can go left, ending the driver's life or go right, ending the passengers' lives."

Otherwise, we're talking about directly causing somebody's death versus indirectly causing somebody's death, the latter being optimal to the former from a legal standpoint.

like a choice between lets say 4 people destroyed for life?
or 1 death.

then I could say 1 death to let the other 4 going on with their lifes, but saving all is also something to choose.

but really depends on damages (for both cases either they get hurt or when you get hurt they WILL not get hurt) and how much they need you?

A "smart" car would of seen it was going to get boxed out at the curve and maneuvered itself to not put anyone in danger in the first place.

Ask the car, it's the driver.

That reminds me of that segment on Top Gear, the car may think ethically unlike a human who would think instinctively to protect themselves.

Here's the segment if you want to see it:
