I am in the market for a very firm cushioned, three seater fabric couch with deep seats and my budget is under $800. When I go to chain furniture stores, should I immediately request that the salesperson show me any clearance couches? How do I steer the person toward showing me an item that's reduced the most, hence being a better value? Are posted prices merely starting posts for negotiation like in mattress stores?

You could avoid all that with a simple click to ebay or amazon.

Guys I think we should be under the assumption that this guy isn't a social mess like us and can buy furniture normally.

You can ask to see if they have any last season furniture in warehouses that did not sale. Just be straight with them and make sure you tell them that you are on a budget and do not want to go over it.

Firstly walk around and feel things out, sit in a lot of different couches and see what you do and doǹt like. Secondly shop around go to different stores. Thirdly wait till February to purchase as new floor models come out in spring and you can get some deep discounts on this current seasons last items.

I feel that somehow since my sister works in a furniture store I should be able to give you advice, but that's just silly because I don't talk shop with my sister and I don't work in a furniture store, and I really don't like dealing with salespeople.

However, I have moved this over to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum, and maybe it will get the attention of a helpful person who actually knows something.
