Stepping into the MAL forums is like stepping into Hell.

Cry me a river! I met several civil-minded users who are worthy of being my friends over there. Just ignore the forums, use common sense and you're good.

There is quite a bit of truth value to this. I met quite a bit of toxic users who have very bad opinions, especially JUSTAlex, whose dumber than a pile of bricks, and Geniobastardo, who believes that Gays should be put to death....but at least he's civil about it, as a muslim. I do think there are a lot of smart people like YanderetheEmo, who certainly gives BlueOni a run for her money (I'm not kidding.), but over all, the main forums are something to be avoided. I've tried several other forums and they were civilized, and far more active than most groups on CR.

Ratings are sort of arbitrary anyway. One way you could look at it is that maybe the admins or mods at MAL use a similar rating system for live-action Hollywood films, and they I think get it wrong too. I've always had a problem with rating systems over all because they will always reflect one group's (a ratings board, in the case of Hollywood films) opinion on how films should be rated. It only confuses matters to have too many ratings or having a similar rating for different content. The way US television rates shows is very easy and the site Hulu impliments that system more than likely on how certain content was rated at time they were broadcast originally. Not sure about the anime shows they stream there but the other shows Hulu carry that's what I've seen.

Awww did someone give you favourite anime a low score

The shows are rated by the average scores of MAL users, the website does not dictate scores they merely provide an average. With the exception of a few "professional" reviewers the scores given by users will not be particularly objective (if at all). Age ratings are important particularly when deciding whether to show or suggest a series or film to someone else or to inform a potential viewer about certain types of content.

I think MyAnimeList is just fine, however that may be because I've been a member for so long, and I don't use the forums.
I, however, talk to many people on there, and I don't mind the ratings.

I don't even use that site.

To me, Anime-Planet.com is more useful.

Use AniList if you don't like MAL and btw, I can copy and paste MAL lists of anime/manga to AniList. Someone just said "Crunchyroll is superior to Myanimelist". Well, okay girl! then how do you explain the amount of people over here being childish and idiotic too? I don't see how everybody here is better than everybody in MAL, see the hypocrisy? a certain amount of nice guys on CR does not speak for the rest of the community; the same goes to MAL.

If anybody is gonna complain about MAL reviews, then take a look at how biased Anime Planet reviews can be by being routed solely on ignorance and nostalgia. I looked up Inuyasha in AP and there were insufficient critical helpful reviews. Reviewers over there barely know how to write, anyway. Those Inuyasha reviews, for example, were mostly rip-offs of each other. It's not that they ran out of ideas, it's just that most of them can't get their own s**t out of their noggins before writing reviews. Weeaboos! Weeaboos everywhere!

I wasn't talking about the users. I was talking about me liking the website itself.

I don't even look at the ratings. I just use it to make a list of all the anime I've seen. I really don't care what the rating is

The users are part of the website, which also make up MALs forums. If you don't like the overall interface in MAL either, then use AniList instead. Sure, I use it, but it's not like I consider it my main website any more than the cool girl I met over there.

ayyyyy I'm glad to see someone else bring up Anime-Planet (on that note however most of the stuff I say about Anime-Planet will be directed at people who have never heard of it or used it, I just quoted you to acknowledge a fellow user lol)

tbh I got an account on it before I had even heard of MAL because the head admin of Anime-Planet followed me on twitter so I ended up making an account on the website lol, but even in retrospect I am really glad I did discover it because I am not a fan of MAL.

Unlike most people in this thread, I don't ever really go in the MAL forums (unless I am looking something up and end up there), my main problems with it are far more trivial.

Firstly, because there are so many users, the score averages are all so close together that it is impossible to tell at a glance, or without prior knowledge and experience, what the general consensus is of whether or not a show is 'good'. You'll look up something and see it has a score like 6.72 or something, and think for a while that that is a pretty good score, round it up and 7/10 is for me a solid, decent show, but this score seems to equate more to something like a 4 or 5 out of 10 everywhere else.

Secondly, and this is even more trivial but it bothers me a lot, is how for ongoing shows it doesn't have a counter for how many episodes have aired, so you may go for ages not realising the latest episode of something has been released (less of a problem for me because all I do with my life is watch anime pretty much non-stop but I still find it irritating). In contrast, Anime-Planet always has the episode count as something like '[number]+ episodes', so even if the series had been confirmed to have 25 episodes, if there had only been 10 that had currently aired, you would see the series logged as '10+ episodes', and you select your episode count from a dropdown menu, rather than inputting it yourself. Granted, this sometimes leads to hour-long delays where episode counts are not updated, but usually they are updated at the beginning of the day they air, rather than after each airs, to accommodate this. On MAL however, for something with an unconfirmed total episode count you would just see 'unknown' which is kind of annoying if you don't know anything about it, or if it isn't available on legal streaming sites (e.g. something like Youkai Watch).

Generally I just don't really like the layout of MAL to be honest, I just find it (understandably I suppose) complicated, and also it just looks like a really outdated, unpleasant website. Also although the different priorities and other information you can put on your anime list is useful, I find it a bit overwhelming. I mainly prefer Anime-Planet because it has the same 'friendly' vibe I get from Crunchyroll lol (also they have a sort of partnership where you can watch CR videos straight from A-P and they regularly have news posts in collaboration with A-P on the CR news section). Because a lot less people use A-P as well, the scoring is more accurate imo, even though some will remain skewed (e.g. second and third seasons of things, where the rating gets higher the more seasons there are because people that didn't like the first season stop watching it or something).

Also I think the recommendations system on A-P is clearer than on MAL, which was kind of the main point of A-P to begin with I believe.

Yeah I kind of went on for a bit. tl;dr, I'm not a fan of MAL, Anime-Planet is great etc. etc.
