If so, then steam has somehow managed to fuck their infrastructure over in ways that are unimaginable.

Welcome to infosec! Steam really did their homework.

I'm not a genius at networking, but for the programs I've wrote that do use networking the closest I've gotten to this is a buffer overflow.

I wonder if their customer services will improve or get worst? Now that this has happened.

Was this just America? Because I've had access to the store ever since I woke up.

Steam just made sure that this Christmas will be memorable. Merry Christmas, Joe, here's Tom's personal information!

You know what's sad about this? I see nothing about this in Steam's twitter pages. Not in @steam_games and not in @Steam_Support. Tweeting that information should come from the store itself, not from the third party that people are less likely to follow. Seriously.

I'm currently on vacation in Costa Rica, so I can't get access to Steam where I am. I never log out of my account. Didn't get any email from Steam today regarding this. What should I do? Should I check my credit card account when I have the chance?

Steam faced something of a catastrophe this afternoon, giving players across the world access to the personal information in other people’s accounts. It’s not yet clear how this happened, but it’s a doozy. Call it the Steam Winter Fail.

This is a really good discussion but someone started a thread about this before you did, so I'm closing this one. Please continue discussion there:
