Towns criticized for using explicit anime to boost economy
Posted 12/29/15
The city of Shima, the host of the 2016 Group of Seven summit in central Japan, withdrew “Megu Aoshima,” a 17-year-old girl diver character, as its official character in November after angry women who actually work as divers launched a campaign. The character, used on posters advertising Shima, was clothed in a tight-fitting diving dress that showed her thighs and emphasized her breasts.

Those women have every right to say how they'd like to be represented.

I may be wrong but didn't pearl divers primarily dive nude throughout history? if so complaining that the mascot is too revealing seems kinda odd.

You have to appreciate the veiled comment at the end. If this was proposed by a female who openly stated it was her idea and campaigned for it, then the outcry may not have been as extreme. It was expected to place an expectation of what one will see, even though it is clearly animated. Sometimes folks have trouble separating fantasy from reality.

Edit:

These aren't pearl divers who dove nude to prevent the hiding of pearls, but divers that get food for their family and town. It has apparently become a bit of a tourist attraction to see them work.

But its not they who are being represented are they? didn't find that on the page from OP.
Even though it could be a bit more modern and what did they use it for (image) if it was for local attraction I don't see the harm.
but if it was for a group or more a direct advertisment then yeah not a great idea unless if you actually did it old style.

That's not the image you're talking about, is it? Please tell me people aren't getting offended over an incredibly safe image like that...

I mean, the Japanese have a different culture, but even so... Maybe that image is "inappropriate" in an elegant kind of way, but explicit? No.

No, no, no. Stop. Stop please. This is stupid.
