Is It Wrong To Get Offended If You'Re Not The Target? Or On Other's Behalf?
Posted 12/30/15
Basically the title. I've been told "not to speak for other people", such as transgender. What do you think? Personally, unless the offense was trivial I believe I can get outraged.

If it doesn't involve me, I tend not to care.

KML, if someone gets offended on behalf of someone else, they clearly have nothing more productive to do with their time.

Well, being outraged on a forum isn't the most productive thing, but I can't help it. Not the trivial ones, mind you, but something clearly a matter of encroaching upon my ethics as a human being.

I think the problem is, not enough people get outraged. Too many young people not doing anything except to benefit themselves.

If it's none of your business, stay out of it.

Yes, If I wanted someone to get offended I would get upset myself. If I don't care, why should you?

I personally find it offensive when someone is offended for someone else.

Edit: If said person being offended is not offended by the offensive thing, then there should be no reason to give it a second thought. People can speak for themselves and don't need someone else speaking for them

You can do what you want. If you want to leave a comment letting them know that you disagree with their opinion and think it's ignorant/distasteful then do so. If someone I was talking to in person said something racist/bigoted that's about all I would do, so the same applies online. Not worth arguing or trying to change someone's mind though. Just say your piece and get away from them.
It's normal to speak out against things you disagree with. Shutting up just because other people don't like it is weak.

If the you are NOT the target then there is no need to take offense for someone else. What if the real target does not get offended and you do? what does that say about you?

So basically, unless I am transgender, I can't, say, donate $5 to a transgender help line?

I beleive everyone should learn to take offense. Remember, taking offense for a group is different than a person. Say someone says something clearly racist, but the black guy doesn't do anything. Then the racist uses tokenism as a defense saying"What, he's not doing anything about it!" That just seems like a bogus defense, to use one anomaly as the rule all be all. You're basically categorizing an entire group of people and their actions into one person. Isn't that outrageous?

That's different. Of course you can support.

Though to be offended for them especially if they are not offended themselves is different.

If my memory serves correct when Speedy Gonzales popped up he was considered offensive to Mexicans. However Mexicans weren't offended, but people were being offended for them
