It is fine for you to be offended. It is fine for you to even say that you're offended.

You cross a line when you begin discussing how the "target" feels. People usually don't like others to speak for them.

I wouldn't say it's wrong to be offended for someone but it's not someone elses place to intervene. Feeling a certain way is fine but acting upon it isn't. A person needs to stick up for themselves if they find it offends them or bothers them enough.

Personally nothing bothers me nor would I bother to stick up for someone else. Grow thick skin or learn to deal with shit on your own is how I see it.

Actually.. no it's not. But no, white knighting is never okay. You're doing nothing more than announcing that you know better the struggle of the people that are actually suffering. It's okay to not like what other people say, because that's your opinion and guess what, everyone has one, but if it's not your own personal situation than it's none of your business.

Now please, everyone is offended enough, stop being more offended.

stop

IMO white knighting and getting offended on behalf of other people start from different premises. Though I am not sure "offended" is the right word either. White knighting is for showing off, whereas taking someone's side in a conflict, for example, means that you bluntly want to set the record straight: you disagree with the way they act towards someone and it's just a natural instinct to protect the weaks. ( I guess xD).

It's true that the butthurt plague has spread a lot, but that doesn't mean we should be confusing facts: overreacting to everything differs from actually stating a legit point of view.

I think it all depends on the scenario.

Going along with PeripheralVisionary's use of transgender issues as an example, let's say someone posts something that you consider offensive or derogatory towards the transgender community on a forum somewhere. Because this is just sort of a "shout into the void" situation where the comment will only reach a niche group of people, it's plenty fine to voice your response, even if you yourself are not transgender.

However, in a real world situation, it's better to let people who are directly affected by the comment/actions/etc speak up, but if there is a lack of willing or able leaders who are interested, then it would be fine to spearhead something yourself. Using the transgender example again, it would sort of boil down to a situation where a person could be an ally to the cause and be very knowledgeable on the topic, but in the end they still wouldn't be able to relate to the struggles on a deeper, more personal level, thus isolating themselves from their audience. So, in real life, the separation between supporting and leading becomes more obvious than it would online.

Overall, I'd say it isn't wrong to get offended if you're not the target of the statement or offending thing, but know that there are limitations. I think it'd be a good idea to read up on those kind of things and to make note that you're not speaking on behalf of the entire community, but rather, voicing your own opinion.

I assumed he was talking about rushing to the defense of someone else because someone said something that he considers offensive to the person being spoken to.

Its not that being a white knight and being offended come from different directions; I see it as white knighting stemming from the act of being offended for someone else, who often times isn't actually offended or even bothered by what was said.

So there is a major difference in arguing your side and rushing to someone else's aid when it has literally nothing to do with you.

And you're right in the sense that tumblr knights do use it to show off. But some white knights actually believe that they're speaking for the greater good or some crap like that.

I was hanging out with my Gay friend one day out at the mall.
We're talking about things because stuff, and he turns out ending a sentence with "That's so gay!"
A stranger (Who even told us she wasn't Gay) proceeded to whip her head around like the exorcist and scold him about his usage of the word "Gay" and how it's derogatory and offended her because he wasn't being considerate of the gay population.
I watched and laughed as he flamed her out for not letting him use "his populations" word however he wanted.

The way I see it, Freedom of Speech is pretty much always going to be here. You can either waste energy to get mad about what people say and fight on the internet and debate to your hearts content, or you can use your energy to actually fight /for/ different causes and make an impact in your own community.

If it goes against your morals it's understandable to be offended. Standing up and shouting 'hey! That could be offensive to someone!' I'm against because unless you are offended, shut up. Just because someone could be offended doesn't mean you should be offended on their behalf. Again though, if you're honestly offended, speak up and ignore the haters. That's life, someone will always disagree with you.

No, I think that doesn't make logical sense. That would be like saying, as a Straight I wouldn't have a right to advocate for Gays, or vice verse.

I myself advocate for European White Americans and Europeans, but I'm not White.

Don't get offended by this picture, this girl is absolutely a dream.

I don't know, man. Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon? (Sorry couldn't resist).

To answer your question, no, it is not.

Not for major offensives, but women did serve as officers. Similar to how the USA up until recently never had females in combat, but they did other things.
