Experimentalists. Not that their existence offends me; it's just that the existing experimentalists as a class seem to be uneducated in philosophy, disdainful of theory, and whiny and controlling. God forbid anyone actually need a class to teach understanding of a thing; they don't need to understand, so it's unfair if a class spend time on it. Who cares what theorists need to know, or about creating an atmosphere that encourages curiosity and inquiry. That's too hard; I just want my piece of paper that says I'm smart.

I don't think I really get offended by anything, but I really don't like it when people talk bad things about others behind their back. I'm sure I've done so myself in the past (just can't remember), but I try to make sure not to do it in the future.

Hypocrites offend me. But in very specific ways. Like, I'm all for someone having an opinion, or viewpoint that changes over time. What bugs me is preachy people that do the things that they preach against.

For example, I went on a date with a black girl (her being black is relevant) recently. She brought up politics. I usually don't mind talking politics, but I didn't really want to talk about it on a first date. She started saying that she would never associate with right wing people, as they would have nothing to say to her because they were either racist or prejudice in some way. I asked her why she would assume that. She said she had "a few" experiences with right wing people. I then pointed out that she was demonising a whole group of people due to a few bad experiences. I then told her that I am not left or right, and that the "us and them" mentality, in my opinion, is a big problem in society. She then went on to tell me that it was easy for me to have that opinion, because I'm a white male and because she was black, she'd get "shouted down" (which frankly I find to be utter BS). The irony being that she was trying to shut down my opinion by reducing it to being about my race and gender.

The whole scenario was offensive, and ridiculous. Not only was she guilty of stereotyping a group of people and being prejudice, but she was also race baiting me because of my opinions. Even though this was essentially her complaint about "The Right wing". I'm finding this kind of thinking a lot nowerdays and I find it frustrating and annoying and it's been fucking with my dating life for too long. It needs to stop

I know it's probably petty and obvious... but I get offended when you're trying to be kind to someone and they are rude back to you. That kind of attitude really gets on my tits.

That seems like a pretty broad brush you're painting with. It's unfortunate that those are the kinds of experimentalists you've had interactions with. I don't know about your field, but in physics every experimentalist needs to know the theory, and every theorist needs to know some of the experimental stuff. They just don't work in isolation. I'm an experimentalist, and the theory is by far the most important part of any class I take as it teaches a way of thinking and how to calculate from first principles and then provides the general formula which is the most widely applicable and powerful. I do wish that sometimes profs would take the theory a little bit further and show how you might use it in the lab to calculate something. Sometimes I get profs who derive a formula and it ends up being some super complicated integral (for example), and then they move on to the next topic. I'm sure that's fine for the theorists, but in the lab I need to be able to take that and actually calculate a number (or usually several thousand numbers) so that I can predict the outcome of an experiment, or at least compare the outcome to the theory to see if I did it right. I'm not as good at the math as I should be, and that's my own failing, but if someone would show me how it works occasionally, I'd be able to get better. I know there's only a limited amount of time for classes, but those sorts of things can always be posted online for anyone that's interested.

It sounds like you have an actual reason to be annoyed with experimentalists based on your experience. There are those that think experimentalists are worthless because they're not smart, and theorists are worthless because they don't create new technologies. I think that's a stupid way of thinking. In most fields there's really no way to separate the two, even within a given researcher. You need to know the theory and the experimental stuff, and the field itself needs people who specialize in theory and those that specialize in experiment. I think that's the better way of thinking about it - the theorist label is for those that specialize in theory and the experimentalist label is for those that specialize in experimentation, and theorist *does not* mean someone who only knows theory and experimentalist *does not* mean someone who can only perform experiments.

It sounds like your experimentalist friends need to get their stuff together and realize that, but in the mean time try not to think of all experimentalists as uneducated gorillas. I mean *I* probably fall into the uneducated gorilla category, but I do know some seriously smart experimentalists who can crunch pure theory like nobody's business and plenty of theorists that know their way around a lab blindfolded.

I don't really get offended. I do get somewhat (very) angry about people who get offended on other people's behalf though.
