I haven't seen a lot of "Let's analyze Gintama like your high school teacher used to make you analyze all those books" thread on the internet so I decided to start this forum.

Gintama starts with: Long ago, Edo used to be called the Land of the Samurai but then the Amanto came and forced them to open up. Then these Amanto took power from the people and ruled over them, sounds familiar? There is also strong evidence that the Yato are probably Chinese.

I also knew that all the important Gintama characters are based off someone or some legend so I googled Sadaharu and got a baseball player. So Odd Jobs' pet is based off a Chinese born Japanese baseball player? Lol.

But for the life of me, I cannot figure out who Elizabeth is suppose to represent. Isn't Elizabeth an English name? But why is there a old man hidden inside it?

This is as far as I've gotten, what do you guys think?

I see... so the "Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon" is actually an intricate allegory for the comparatively superior weaponry used by the foreigners to force Japan open, is it...?

-I thought it was just a pha-- I mean, yes. That is pretty deep indeed, Sorachi-sensei.

Sadaharu and Eli are just mascots. I doubt that they are based on actual characters.

I would say the same, but there might be some reason for those names being given to such characters.
Well I think the whole show is not taking itself that seriously to be taken this seriously. There are some moments when staff responsible for the show have appeared in, I guess one of them is Elizabeth.

Let me guess... the PATRIOT is a metaphor for Japan's overhyped yet inferior weaponry and technology?
