do we really need it? there is already an (R) rating which means 18+ so why does a rating which is only increased by a year need to exist? There can't be a big difference between 17+ and 18+. Movies don't do 17+ ratings.

Example of R-17+:

Where do you see R-17+ ratings? And where does "R" mean 18+? For movies in the US R means no one under 17 can be admitted without parent/guardian; not 18+ so it would be really odd to have "R" used to mean 18+ in other contexts (though perhaps not so odd in other countries I guess).

Motion Picture Association of America
ratings directly from there website

do we need the two yes because R 17+ can be viewed by children if the parents think its okay however NC-17 takes the choice away from the parents and doesn't allow anyone 17 or younger in
which with some of the stupid parents out there it's good to be able and stop bad parents from making bad decisions that could adversely affect their children

I don't think I've ever seen R 17+
Only R 18+ though

Because your 9 year old and 7 year old doǹt need to see jason voorhees pin a perky camp girl to a tree with a machete.

Also it is NC-17....

as marinewrestler pointed out, R allows children to see the film with adult consent whereas NC-17 is no children allowed, adult consent notwithstanding.

Ofcourse, there was so many in the 70-90 then it kinda dropped off from there but yeah, I think we need it. I would think mostly indie movies might do it now.

G - General Audiences
(Nothing that would offend parents for viewing by children)

PG - Parental Guidance Suggested
(Parents urged to give 'parental guidance.' May contain some material parents might not like for their young children.)

PG-13 - Parents Strongly Cautioned
(Some material may be inappropriate for pre-teenagers)

R - Restricted
(Contains some adult material. Sex, Drugs, Violence)

NC-17 - Adults Only
(Clearly adult. Children are not admitted. May contain Sex, Drugs, and Violence but only to a limit)

The only place I have ever seen an "R-17" label is Pixiv... and in that context, it is either a cleverly censored R-18 work, or a highly suggestive R-15 one.

-R-17.9 is also a thing, apparently...

...oops. I misread the text...

I just figured R-17 is just another way of saying it's rated R.

If you mean MyAnimeList it is 99% of the time hentai that shows censored vaginal/penis stuff.

If the OP meant the website, either that was their own rating for the Black Lagoon episodes, or a foreign site--
Movies in the US are R (over 17 with permission) and NC-17 (no permission), while TV has "TV-MA" for South Park reruns.

TV shows and videos are not submitted to MPAA ratings, and like video games, have their own system.
And since the MPAA owns the copyright on "PG-13", "R", "X" and "NC-17", a hentai video rated "R-18" or a porn video rated "XXX" likely made it up.

I'm from the UK so all this R business doesn't mean anything to me. Here we just label stuff with ages. It's a much simpler system
