Final Fantasy. My favorite entry isn't a usual favorite, though. VIII, which seems to have a huge mixed reception even all these years later.

1. Secret of Mana 2 / Seiken Densetsu 3 - most replayed for me... tried a lot of character combination and classes... playing around Riesz or Duran is fun.
2. Chrono Trigger - 2nd most replayed JRPG for me. Quest to max out Crono through multiple new game+ and using all stat booster consumables on him!
3. Valkyrie Profile - fun gameplay and it's fun to play around characters. I have a lvl99 Badrach!
4. Xenogears - replayed once only(this is a seriously long RPG...) for the story and awesome soundtrack!
5. Final Fantasy 6 - replayed for about 2x for the sake of replaying since FF6 gameplay is kinda simple.

Others I liked:
Valkyrie Profile 2 - not as fun as the first one IMO but still pretty good!
Phantasy Star 4 - replayed this for 3x I think... mostly for the story... gameplay is a bit more complicated than FF6
Langrisser 2 - old JRPG on Sega Genesis. Interesting gameplay and it's fun to play around classes though in the end it's all about the maxed out Princess(it's the name of her cheesiest class though she is really a princess) Sherry cheese. Also Satoshi Urushihara art!
Dewprism - a very short action RPG on the PS1. The story can either be funny or serious(depends on who you're playing, Mint or Rue) but I replayed it for quite a bit cause the gameplay is fun and I was seriously overbuffing Mint and Rue(kinda backfires on you at 1 point cause you need to lose in a certain point in the story and being overly buffed means it takes forever for you to lose).
Legend of Dragoon - this is a JRPG right? Liked the story and gameplay of this one and I like the fact that you need to be wise on your spending on this RPG(seriously money is hard to come by in this game). I didn't replay it though because at some point travelling can be annoying since for some stupid reason town data aren't saved in all 3 discs meaning for certain towns the game will ask you to change discs and this can be quite a hassle really.
Kingdom Hearts 1 - I like the gameplay of this game and I found it fun to play around the Disney themed maps.
Ogre Battle - simplistic gameplay but playing around classes can be fun. Reputation control and the map secrets are a freaking pain to do though!
Tactics Ogre - more complicated than the first game and predecessor of Final Fantasy Tactics. If you played FFT then you already have an idea what to expect. Fun to play around classes though each map can take a lot of time to clear due to the nature of it's gameplay.

Most of the games I listed are pretty old cause I pretty much stopped playing RPGs after Xenosaga. Yeah I don't have Xenosaga among my top RPGs

Seriously people try playing some of the old RPG I listed... most of them you could play on emulators easily in your computers. Highly recommend playing Secret of Mana 2.

Honestly haven't played many so:
1. Hyperdimension Neptunia Series
2. Valkyria Chronicles
3. FF series
4. NES Dragon Warrior series (first JRPG I played)

and I think that about covers all of them I have played so I guess that's my top 4

I haven't played that many JRPGs but I think I can come up with a list of some sort:

1. Final Fantasy VII and VI. I can't chose between the two so I'll put them as equals.
2. Bravely Default, even though it got really tedious at the middle of the game, it was still a great reminder of the golden age of JRPG's in the NES and SNES.
3. Persona 4, amazingly crafted game
4. Chrono Trigger, simply one of the best stories I've seen in a video game.

Lastly, I'll make an honorable mention to a game that I consider a total hidden gem on the PS3 and Xbox 360: Resonance of Fate. I haven't finished it but it is one of the most unique JRPGs I've ever played. The combat is a bit difficult to explain, it is like a combination between real time and strategy like Valkyria Chronicles but with it's own twists. It is a really challenging and difficult game if you don't think your actions carefully, some people might not like it for that. It's not one of the best games I've ever played but it's really unique and well worth giving it a chance.

I wasn't into playing JRPG's until I started playing Hyperdimension Neptunia. Now I own all the games in the franchise and also have the platinum trophy in some of the Hyperdimension games.

I hear good things about HyperD N games, That's good that they got you into them, they are quite long and complex for first rpg's.

Difficult, nah I don't think so, the battle system is turn based and there aren't an overwhelming number of commands. Honestly, the comedy is probably the best part and the sheer number of video game and anime references makes it hard to stop playing

Does Kingdom Hearts count as JRPG? I also like the Dragon Quest series more than the Final Fantasy series (with a few exceptions) for some reason

2. Valkyria Chronicles
3. Tales of Xillia
4. Fire Emblem Awakening
5. Tales of Symphonia.

Haven´t really played a lot of JRPGs until now. That is changing fast though.

I actually really liked Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
Tales of Vesperia is next.
