I understand what you mean by the overly innocent/nice/good characters. I got tired of that once upon a time and started watching other stuff. I also tried out a few random anime that I never would have before. You should try Hamatora. It's really good. It has action, killing, and characters that jump back and forth between good and evil. (Well, I liked it at least)

OMG YES. I was about to suggest hamatora too.

It's such an awesome anime where everyone is so cool. There needs to be another anime like htat.

Anohana is also another anime where everyone isn't overly nice. But Memma is the only cut & paste char there.

Noragami in some respect is also one where the chars aren't so cut and paste

I understand you
However, as long as I enjoy how the story plays out, it doesn't matter to me if they kill or not

Black Lagoon is a story about a guy that is trying to keep his hands clean and avoid killing, but he's surrounded by murderers, drug lords, crime bosses, you name it. It's pretty much a bunch of 80's action movies that was turned into 24 glorious anime episodes. This is one of my favorites, so I bought it on Blu-ray a while back. Not sure if there's a good streaming site for it. Maybe someone else can help me out on that one.

Black Lagoon (both series and the OVA) is licensed by Funimation and available on their website (US & Canada) and Hulu (US only).

I really like this thread, Ive been feeling the same way actually. Most Shonen which is completely oversaturating the market is a big problem. I came to see anime because its supposed to be more aimed to an adult audience, but what do I usually get? I get overwhelmed by these two dimensional generic characters that have this mindset of a child, they have this perfect attitude, they're are the nicest person on the planet, they are ridiculously dense and afraid to even touch a girl let alone blush at everything they say or do LOL. We have these scenarios so many times it's absurd. We have these hero of justice characters that see everything in black and white, we have a constant high school setting, rarely a mature environment.

We had anime like gundams, dragon ball, serial experiment lain ( on G4) Yu Yu hakusho, cowboy bebop, outlaw star etc... on Toonami and adult swim, we hardly get shows like these anymore with exception of gundam and I almost forgot Blue Gender
Psychological thrillers and Cyber punk type shows is pretty absent now in favor of dare I say the word...... Weebo anime with sunshine rainbow atmosphere and characters 24/7.

When I got back into anime around 2012 I randomly started off with Clannad, Angel Beats, Golgo 13, Elfin Lied on Netflix. Amazing anime by far and I made the right choices, and now after the years it's all gone down hill. I also watched High school of The Dead during that time and that was when I first came across fanservice and oddly it didn't take me out of the suspenseful immersion of those 12 episodes, that anime had a real threat going on with real world dangers with society in a major crisis. One of the chicks was gonna get assaulted at the gas station for crying out loud.

So that's my rant and thus I've been reducing a great deal of anime each season because of these issues, but there might be hope this year with lineups I've been seeing.

The ironic thing about Black Lagoon is that the author almost never kills recurring characters. Of all of the characters who appear in more than one story arc, only one or two minor ones actually die. Every other character who bites it is either a nameless goon, arc villain, or a sympathetic character intended to be killed in the same arc.

I love anime but there is one huge fundamental problem that it has. After finishing 77 anime series and over 2000 episodes of shonen

Well for one there's different Genre's, it's a large reason why i don't keep myself isolated to just one.
For two once you get into the thousands than we'll talk.

You have been brainwashed. This is what most producers want in the people who watch their shows.

The Talk no kill thing is kind of annoying it has it's time and place but when its used at the wrong time its supper annoying. Hunter x hunter does this well the main characters will still kill but when needed they will try to Talk.

I love anime but there is one huge fundamental problem that it has. After finishing 77 anime series and over 2000 episodes of shonen i have gotten to the point were i cant watch most anime anymore. here is why

TALK NO KILL - this is when the MC decides not to kill his enemy but to talk to him and try to have him change his ways instead.

SPARING - when the MC spares his enemies.

and worst of all

CLEAN HANDS - when the writers of the show decide from the very beginning that there main character will never kill anyone no matter what.

Imagine any good movie. Now imagine that movie if the main characters never killed anyone. imagine that movie if the main characters decided to try and reform the bad guy instead. EXACTLY do you see how cheesy and lame it would be?

alot of anime creators have this idea of this noble, strong ,kind, perfect person that is even willing to try and save the biggest piece of shit you can think of. and in some cases it works but the problem is that more than half of anime seems to have this theme now days. and instead of it looking noble, strong and kind. it looks scared, cowardly and weak. it looks like the MC has no back bone it makes the MC look like a spineless wimp.

the only perfect case of this i can think of is Naruto. In naruto they do a perfect job. naruto has backbone and when he fights you he has the intent to kill. he has even killed a few people in filler episodes which are non cannon but still.

the only problem is that about half of anime has this theme now days. and once you have seen talk no kill for the thousands time it will make you go insane. One of the fundamental problems with it is that it restricts flow and storytelling. its also a giant let down you want that big piece of shit to get whats coming to him not a lecture instead.

but now im at this point were whenever i try a new anime half the time it pisses me off.

Do any of you also have this problem?

You lost me at 'NARUTO DOES A PERFECT JOB'

Watch more. There's plenty of shows that have killin' and blowing shit up
