From my experiences, fandoms can a be good or bad thing. My experiences with toxic fandom's involved the Hetalia /Black Butler/Free!!/Yaoi fandoms. While i'm not a hardcore fan of these (With the exception of Black Butler.) I enjoy most of them in small, tiny doses. However most of the people I encounter that are heavily involved in these fandoms are very very toxic and love to throw red herrings like they are going out of style if you do something as simple as disagree with a ship.
I think I grew an exteme distaste for the whole group right around when this happened. (Which could be a whole conversation in itself.) :

His response for those interested:

But what do you guys think? Please inform me of your toxic fandom experiences, and let me know if I'm the only crazy one or not.

First off...I'm really happy there's a group like this here, even though I'm old enough to be some of y'all's mama

As to answer your question,

I think every fandom probably has a few toxic folks, but anytime I see a post about how X/Y is canon because the characters are together in one scene or in the case of Free, where people assume that because it's an all male cast, it's yaoi, I get a little pissy. Because it's bad enough that people stereotype female fans as fujioshi.

Though, I've heard the Vic Mignona thing for YEARS and laughed my arse off when people seriously tried to get him off the Free dub. No one likes the Japanese cast? And has that it ever been proven that Vic even said that crap? That's like such a big urban legend.

I stay away or try to stay away from certain people that make me uncomfortable; for example, I'm probably active with Touken Ranbu fans right now; for those that don't know, it's an online game similar to Kancolle but its men and boys as historical Japanese swords. As you can imagine, there's totes lot of a ships going on. Including shipping several characters who are:

1. Shotas.

2. Supposed to be brothers and I dont' get the fascination with incest.

You bring it up though and people will bite your damn head off.

As for Hetaila...I love Hetaila but I never really was that involved with fandom.

Yeah, I know how it is. I do my best in general to avoid those types of people. I have had so many of my "friends" lock me into situations like that, and made me feel like an idiot for the way I go about my fandoms. You never want to be mean and stoop to their level, but you wanna defend your points and help make the community a friendly one. But as they say, the rotten apple spoils the bunch...

There are a few mainstream animes fandom's (Which I will not name) that are filled with people who shouldn't be allowed to contribute to the fandom. They post things that just ruin everyone else's experience in these fandoms. Some of these things are when people take characters from kid's franchises and sexualize them. It's just awful.

I have been a member of several fan fiction sites for some time now, and recently discovered a fandom for League of Legends. Fyi, LOL is an online game that in itself can be very toxic depending on who you play with and how involved in the drama you allow yourself to get. I played for a few months with some friends just to hang out with them online really. (Several live too far away to visit often, like other side of the country, or other countries entirely.) That being said, the fandom for the game is, in my opinion, more toxic than the game. The characters and some of the story line are interesting, but the fandom is 90% OCs and almost nothing involving the actual LOL characters themselves unless it`s yaoi. Dont get me wrong, yaoi is ok once in a while, but it disappoints me that that is the only thing fans of the series (that I have found) seem to be able to write about. I just dislike how the characters have basically become nothing more than props in lewd fantasies. I do like fan fiction, and fandoms, but I wish fans would take the time to research the character thoroughly first before writing about them. More substance, like actual character personality traits is something I would really appreciate.

I've heard that LOL is a pretty toxic place to be. The only MOBA I play is DOTA 2, and I haven't played that game in a LONG time. I know how it is, however, to have a game be one of the only ties to a certain friend who is far away. It can make the experience all the worse when the fandom is toxic or the game ITSELF isn't very fun. OOCness has definitely gotten way out of control, and you phased the whole deal and an interesting way about them being props. Its always nice, however, when you can find a good fanfiction, with a little fanservice, and a little fun, but also have some substance and story to them as well! ^^

Haha I will admit there are a *few* with OCs and fanservice I do like. I`m a fan of psych anime and stories already though, so I love it when the writer really gets in to the character. Anyone can describe how someone looks or throw in a conflict here or there, it`s the reason why the character reacts that way that interest me. Don`t get me wrong, OCs can be amazingly built and executed, I just find that to be rare in my experience. Most fan fiction I`ve come across is like cheap smut lol.

On another note, I have never played DOTA, but I have heard some good things. The only other MMO I played a lot was Mabinogi and I still dearly miss my friends there as I have no other way to get a hold of them. Unfortunately my laptop won`t handle the game anymore, so it looks like I`ll be getting a new computer before I get in to online gaming again.

Yeah, I'm lucky to have the laptop I have now. Its my only real source into accessing the online world.
