I'm a simple small town kind of guy who grew up on cartoons and comics, but in recent years been drawn towards manga and anime. Last year I really looked into Japanese culture and art and was fascinated by all the things they had that I'd really want to do. One of them being a Manga Cafe. I look for ages for something similar to what they had in Japan, but there's nothing, NOTHING, in the U.S. that even comes close to what they have in Japan.

If I were to offer thousands of manga, internet, food, anime, movies, tv, video games, for hourly pricing and deals as low as $10, would anyone be interested in spending their time there?

And more importantly where would I start it? I've looked at locations and there are open spots next to convention centers where year-round there're conventions for comics, anime, manga and the likes; Sacramento, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Francisco. These are the cities I'm looking at, but it comes at a risk if I do this. I would do a kickstarter, but even before kickstarter, I need to know if anyone would come.

Would you?

(UPDATE: I'm thinking Vegas. I'd like to keep the place open 24/7 and vegas would be the city to do so. I'd have a policy where you break it, you buy it. Ever book is check in and out and I found some great covers for paperback manga that protect from those sticky fingers.)

this is a bad idea for several reasons:

1. running a business is expensive
2. anime/manga is a very small, niche thing in the US
3. there's a very good chance that the kids coming will ruin your anime/manga/game collection in one way or another, making it necessary to replace them with new ones
and of course, most people who like anime/manga already found ways to watch it / read it for free (legally or otherwise)

Making an anime/manga specific place is probably too niche. I think it would make more sense to open a hobby store. We have places like that around here. They sell comics, manga, anime, etc. They also have a net cafe and places for people to do tabletop gaming, hang out/watch movies or TV, order snack food... Basically just a nerd store/hangout spot.

I think we have 2 of those in my town that are successful, which is a college town with 100,000+ people. Others have tried to open but failed quickly. I think it's a risky business, but it would be really cool if you could make it work. Maybe find one that is working and try to see what they are doing right.

There was one in L.A., but it is permanently closed. The nearest one is in Mexico City or France!
