It was a pretty enjoyable watch IMO, but I would still agree with the "cringe worthy" thing.

It's cringe worthy mostly because of how cringe worthy people like that in general are IRL. Even more so if you are/were one of them and thus can relate to her.

Now I'm interested in watching this but I feel like everyone's dancing around the fact that it might be boring af, or something like 5cm/s or School Days (haven't watched it, won't watch it)

I like that one gif posted here. If the anime is high-quality like that, then I mean, for the animation's sake, I wouldn't get bored cuz I'd be distracted by the shininess.

Is it cringeworthy like Elfen Lied
Cringeworthy like boku no pico

or....

...?

Kuroki Tomoko is a super popular high school girl who has had 50 years of dating experience and 100 boys... in the Otome game world. In the real world, she is a 15-year-old shut-in who has all of the qualities of a "mojo" (a gloomy or unpopular woman).

However, when school isn't going as she expected, and she isn't as popular as she had thought she would be, she takes a look at herself in the mirror for the first time in a few years, and has some shocking revelations...

nvm, it totally sounds like welcome to the NHK. Seems like it makes fun of otakus. it might be cringeworthy for the wrong reasons *sigh*

Thanks for sharing that--it's a good reference for any one who's interested in prior discussion. Since it's been so long since there's been any discussion there though, I'm leaving this thread open.

For a while, this was my favorite show. While it was airing, I actually moved up from being a free user and subscribed for the first time just to watch it in HD the day it came out.

Yea, it is extremely cringeworthy, but I always felt like the point was to make a character who experienced every cringey scenario imaginable so that as many people as possible can relate to her.

OR - if you're someone like me and has lived a life of cringe far higher than normal, then Tomoko makes you feel like you're not alone.

I practically look at her like the patron saint of cringe.

I definitely enjoyed my cringe. They somehow made it a good thing, just as NNB makes "trees and trickling water" a good thing (normally for me it would be the worst possible thing in the world).

I watched the first episode because I kept seeing the character in places. I see the appeal. The problem is, I'm not a 13 year old unpopular girl with a plethora of issues revolving around wanting to be in a relationship. I'm sure if I were, I'd find it enjoyable... Or depressing. It would be relatable at least?

She's in high school, and therefore cannot be 13.

I am not her age, or female, or Japanese, and I never even went to high school, but that doesn't mean I can't relate to her problems. You are being superficial.

I've seen the anime (loved it) and currently keep up with the manga (also love it). I will admit it has its cringe-y moments but its far less than something like Shimoneta was. I honestly can find myself relating to Kuroki in some aspects, while loving how she goes against the usual anime female archetype. I put it in a similar vein as Oregairu honestly just with a female lead. Would love another season.

Cringiest anime imo = Shimoneta
