I watched the first episode because I kept seeing the character in places. I see the appeal. The problem is, I'm not a 13 year old unpopular girl with a plethora of issues revolving around wanting to be in a relationship. I'm sure if I were, I'd find it enjoyable... Or depressing. It would be relatable at least?

She's in high school, and therefore cannot be 13.

I am not her age, or female, or Japanese, and I never even went to high school, but that doesn't mean I can't relate to her problems. You are being superficial.

Claims 13 is not high school age, which is incorrect... Never went to high school. Guess that explains it. To be honest though, I was just being insulting. Her problems are stupid and I have no empathy for people with them.

If she was 13 she would be in junior high/middle school.

I'm sure you know all about her problems after watching one episode.

That's assuming there is a three tier system. Even then she could still be in high school. Regardless arguing about this point is pointless. Fuck if I know about her age, and fuck if I care. Point is, she's an immature teenager.

I know enough about her problems. It covered a lot in the first episode.

We don't have to assume anything, because we know how Japan's school system works. Well, at least some of us do.

I don't know why you're even attempting to be an expert on the show after watching a single episode. This is just embarrasing.

I can't be fucked to argue anymore. It was a stupid argument in the first place. Especially when you pull shit right from your anal cavity like saying I claimed to be an expert.

You sure talk like you're intimately familiar with the series.

I've seen the anime (loved it) and currently keep up with the manga (also love it). I will admit it has its cringe-y moments but its far less than something like Shimoneta was. I honestly can find myself relating to Kuroki in some aspects, while loving how she goes against the usual anime female archetype. I put it in a similar vein as Oregairu honestly just with a female lead. Would love another season.

Cringiest anime imo = Shimoneta

Is it because Shimoneta wasn't funny with its lewd material? I watched 6 episodes of it. I am very disappointed.

Its actually a realistic ridiculous look on people in the anime community though.

Now OreIImo... THATS cringe worthy, not only is is it ridiculous... its ridiculous and unrealistic. And to make it worse it tries to seem realistic, where in Watamote its like... "Yup... I surely know people like that."

That makes it a true cringe-worthy show.

Or you're just projecting your anti-otaku sentiments onto it.

I don't know how you managed to develop the idea that Oreimo is supposed to be realistic, or that anime is or should be all about realism.

ANti-otaku? Dont start with me. I said nothing about it only applying to people in the anime community, I just said that so you guys can relate. That, and I know for a fact I know many people like that in person who come with this culture, and gamers too. People who dont even watch anime FYI. Someone is defensive.... And how do you know I dont consider myself one? And what makes you think I think everyone in the anime community is a otaku? Do you even know the meaning behind that word? Ignorance ontop of ignorance. Have a seat.

And secondly yes, because people call OreImo a actual "romance" anime. Thus they think it applies to actual real romance and thus it is considered realistic by many. Im going off what people think here, the whole point of this thread.

My thoughts on the subject.

There are times when I really don't know how to feel about Watamote, particularly once I put it in the context of how Japan typically views the socially awkward and mentally ill. It comes off as a somewhat mean-spirited anime if you take it literally. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe I'm supposed to be seeing all those stereotypes being manifested and respond with revulsion at their very existence, that the point is to illustrate how ridiculous and cruel it really is to shift all of the blame and assert that peoples' loneliness, isolation, and misery are rooted purely in their simply being lazy, selfish, stupid, ugly, impulsive, and closed-minded the way Japan so comfortably does to otaku on a daily basis. Maybe it's a very clever anime.

My understanding is that a lot of people feel that way about Tomoko [that she's a reflection of themselves], and that may feed into a third hypothesis: the series is essentially exaggerating every insecurity otaku have come to posses in an effort to either lessen the blow of discussing them through comedy or to show otaku they really aren't as troubled as they think they are.

A fourth interpretation is that the series is just about a person with an extraordinarily severe case of social anxiety, but that would be taking it pretty much at face value and leaving it at that. I'm hesitant to do so.

I love the series. It's also one of the few manga that I keep up with.

Later story arcs, as well as the prequel are freaking awesome and hilarious. It's a shame that we probably won't get to see them animated.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Western anime community being almost religious in its persecution and demonization of otaku.

And how do you know I dont consider myself one?

An otaku would not have made that comment about Oreimo.

I'm one of the few people who do.

It does not say anywhere that a romance story has to be realistic.

More that Shimoneta was more ridiculous and of the absurd type in a far more abundant amount; while Watamote has its moments they're usually pretty down to earth and can even be related to. Anna (Shimoneta) alone has more cringe-y moments than Tomoko.
